What turtabe (sic) do you use and why?

That's a good question. Why do you use a turntable? Because it's chic and trendy, or because you believe the Earth is flat?

I do have quite a few LP's... they made great plantpot holders once heated-up.

Did the Glasgow mafia provide dealers with a script, the problem not being the fruit box but the albums being played. This was my experience.

I use a turntable that got a 10 in this magazine review in my bedroom system: http://www.thevintageknob.org/MISCELLAN ... 980TT.html

As John Lennon might say in response to "Is it the best turntable in the world?" It's not even the best turntable from that brand (in my home).

The review was about right in giving the LP12 a 7 out of 10. That's what I'd give it too. Which is a bit annoying as Ivor T, Popular Hi-fi magazine and my local specialist hi-fi dealer all gave the LP12 a 10, :bulls1: leading to me buying one way back in 1983.

It was the £2500 odd price of the Keel that eventually bumped me off the Linn upgrade gravy train. As well as a Doc hosted pfm bake-off where Zener's LP12 was beaten by some humble Jap direct drives. Followed by lots of feeble excuses from the Linn crowd - who didn't even attend the event. :violin:

The Linn reps were ex hi-fi shop spotty dicks, who were already in awe of the master of the dark side, so they just did his bidding, BTW given a Jag as company car helped.

IF he told them to break the bearings in PT turntables in shops when no one was watching they would do it without question. Regarding the dealers and their snotty little brainwashed whelks who worked for them (some have grown up but are still as bad - exampled in YNwanker). They had the factory visit, where IT did a personal job on you.

I know its not the best TT in the world but it IMHO sounds engaging and at less than half the price of the current base spec LP12 it seemed a low risk investment i.e. I could get my money back on it if I don't like it. However I have to agree with some earlier posts that it can be a money pit (if you let it) and current models pricing is laughable but then so are many other mid to so called high end TTs.These days an LP12 is by no means the most expensive deck you can buy.

I have owned a few decks starting off with a Garrard SP25 and then a BSR MacDonald MP60 which I thought sounded better, a TD150 then TD 160 which sounded dull, a Philips GA212 which sounded much better than it should and a Michell Gyro and a number of Technics SL1210 DDs which sounded mechanical and un engaging to me and numerous Regas which sound a little perfunctory to me. The LP12 has its faults but I find it is engaging to listen to and is good enough for me with a modest vinyl collection that is unlikely to grow.
I suggest chuck the AT95 and get a Goldring 1042. I know it has become far more expensive than when I had one, but it really sings in a Linn Basik Plus arm. You will be surprised at the upgrade (used an At95 as a cheap stop gap in this arm).

Well Tempered Limited Versalex

Listened to Nottingham Hyperdeck, Michell Orbe, Rega RP10...and preferred the Versalex. The Rega 10 was the closest for enjoyment but for very different reasons; the Versalex has an endearing ease and purity that very gradually draws you in. The Rega 10 is like a go kart with a 3 litre turbo engine in. Addictive but you know it's not quite right (too shouty for me).

Previously owned Rega 3 (sounded good to this then teenager), LP12 (sounded what I then considered to be marvellous...on just a few records), Voyd Valdi (never warmed to it), Rock Reference (still sad that I had to sell that one), Rega 6 (bought it cheap and sold it the same - thought it could be 'all I'd need' but thought it worse than I remember the old 3)...then the WTL.

Haven't been brave enough to dip into vintage direct drives / idlers but would love to hear them.

PS. I am sating any lingering 'turbo go-kart' addiction with a newly acquired set of Grado 225s...

I have a few turntable/tonearm combinations but I like to use my own in my main system. It has a Clearaudio bearing and platter but the arm is all my own work. I've had several attempts at making my own bearing but my machining skills are not quite there yet.
