The sides are fluted to increase the surface area to allow greater heat dissipation than would be the case without it.TheMadMick wrote: ↑Tue Nov 05, 2019 8:13 pmThe sides are fluted to allow heat dissipation from these output transistors to stop them frying.

Re: Amps - Whats in em and why?
So back to the questions in hand.....
So if you read the excerpt below, what then is or the benefit of;
Polypropylene capacitors
K-Power reserve capacitors
An output stage using 4 x 160w Sanken output transistors. Are Sanken even a good brand.
And secondly looking inside said Amplfier there just one big trodial transformer? Is this really the best way 1 x big I thought NVA Amps had multiples of on either input or output?

The 1st bit is marketing. And the 2nd, you are wrong about nva.
P40 is one 100va per unit, the stereo p60 as on
1 160va.

Though tempting, my word should not be taken as gospel.
Some people will tell you the make of capacitor or output transformer is important. Either decide for yourself or stop worrying about it and listen to your amps.

The make is irrelevant, quality and synergy is important.Daniel Quinn wrote: ↑Wed Nov 06, 2019 8:51 am Though tempting, my word should not be taken as gospel.

We tried out 5 different load resistors for the preamp upgrades - the most expensive was one of the least liked.

Re: Amps - Whats in em and why?
Load resistors, I didn't mention. Can't say empirically - yet- but intuitively they may well make a difference.
Re: Amps - Whats in em and why?
On a valve amplifier having a better quality of output transformer can make a HUGEimprovement to the sound quality.Daniel Quinn wrote: ↑Wed Nov 06, 2019 8:51 am

Unfortunately, better output transformers are mostly much more expensive.

Re: Amps - Whats in em and why?
I didn't mention transformers or valve amps, except were I put transformer and obviously meant transistor.
I have no wish to play about with differing types of colouration. Colour choice I leave to decorating.

You most certainly did Daniel, what amps have "output transformers" apart from valve based ones ?Daniel Quinn wrote: ↑Wed Nov 06, 2019 11:32 am
