The Rush catalogue review is in full swing here and the latest arrival is this CD+DVD edition from 2011. The really exciting news is that the DVD has audio in 5.1 surround and 24bit 96KHz stereo, which I have ripped to my music library and it sounds awesome!
'2112' is an album I never really got around to appreciating properly but you do see that the trio were, literally, reaching for the stars here and taking giant creative steps in their development.

2112 was the album that put Rush in the big league and was in some ways make or break. Fly by night was well received after the Zeppelenesque first album set the foundation. Caress of steel was more adventurous but not well recieved. 2112 followed the path of Caress of steel and it all came together. I personally think Caress of steel is a good album in its own right, The Fountain of Lamneth being inspired by the Ayn Rand novel The Fountainhead. It is a book worth reading.

Finally got hold of 'Caress of Steel' - the one Rush album I cannot remember ever hearing. Will be giving it some attention soon.
The Deluxe and 40th Anniversary editions come with excellently-written essays in the booklets, telling the stories of the various albums.
Rush are definitely a group that warrant time and study. An understanding of their growth brings many rewards and new insights into their works.
