I've been enjoying Japanese psychedelic rock/noise music from - Les Rallizes Dénudés, Dragpur, Up-Tight, Cosmic -Kurushi Monsters, Acid Mothers Temple (free live downloads on archive.net).
Also 'Dilettante - Tantrum' and Natalie Beridze.
The Japanese band Les Rallizes Dénudés mostly concentrated on their live shows and didn't spend much time in a studio although, the music that made it to CD such as 'Heavier than a death in the family' is great if you like wailing guitar and over stressed wah wah pedal with out-of-tune vocals. Sounds great on my hi-fi and also through headphones and laptop. currently playing Les Rallizes Dénudés Live - 1981-03-23 Yaneura, Tokyo, Japan. A free download ! :)

Oddly enough, a conversation this afternoon involved Acid Mothers Temple . . .

However, I've just finished my first spin of "Walk Like A Whelk" by the marvellous Shoes For Industry.
I had searched for many years to find this album, and was leaving a shop today when I thought "I'll just flick through this batch" . . .

It may be 4 am, but I'm into side 2 of "Radio Silence" by Boris Grebenshikov.
I can't remember how I discovered this album, but it was responsible for my finding a hidden world of Russian rock . . .

I also rather like his earlier work with Aquarium. YouTube is handy :D

Penetration 'Moving Targets' (1978)
Penetration 'Coming Up For Air' (1979)

An ongoing programme of re-ripping all of my CD collection to WAV files is taking me to dark, dusty corners where lost treasures lie.
My file-based adventures began with Apple IPod Classic players using, initially, the ALAC codec, then I moved on to FLAC with the arrival of Sonos streamers and ended up with lossless WAV files when the Pi / Volumio players took over.
So, many old favourites that I converted early on need to be updated, because - like Goldilocks and the 3 bears - ALAC is too soft, FLAC too hard but WAV is just right.

Penetration, a Durham band that I adored as a teenager, even attending their farewell gig in London. Their two studio albums are remarkable for their time. Riding the Punk wave, Penetration were fronted by the tiny ball of energy who called herself Pauline Murray and came across as a mix of Siouxsie and Liz Fraser of the Cocteau Twins.

Musically it is interesting to hear these albums afresh, 40+ years on. This is no amateuristisc Punk thrash, there is some clever, accomplished musicianship on display here with a Rock style suspiciously close to the NWOBHM groups emerging at the time. No surprise then that lead guitarist Fred Purser would join The Tygers of Pan Tang after Penetration's breakup.

Seeing the band live you could see that the two guitarists disliked each other with Neale Floyd standing almost in the wings to be as far as possible from Purser.

Pauline Murray later made an attempt at a solo career with a tremendous Martin Hannett-produced album featuring Vini Reilly and John Cooper Clarke's backing band The Invisible Girls.

Nostalgia ! :banana-dreads: :banana-guitar:

Addendum for above:

Read an interview with Neale Floyd last night where he stated that he and Fred Purser were actually good friends - it just looked onstage as if they hated each other and that was assumed in the music press to be the reason why the band split up.

The actual reason was due to Pauline who was the real boss of the group, She wanted a different approach and ended up going solo (supported by her boyfriend, bassist Robert Blamire). Floyd was the first to leave and felt unfairly treated. There was an attempted reunion of the main lineup in 2009 but it went ahead without further involvement from Floyd or Purser.

Tangerine Dream 'Rockface' (2003)

Image

A 2CD live album recorded during the 1988 'Optical Race' tour of the USA featuring a short-lived trio of Edgar Froese, Paul Haslinger and Ralph Wadephul from which, many years later, the only studio sessions from this group were released as 'Blue Dawn'. Wadephul found touring and being so far away from home difficult and quit after this one trip out. A pity because the classic TD magic is present here and you have the idea that the three musicians could play well together.

Furthermore this is a stunningly good soundboard recording that was later tweaked and cleaned up in TD's own studio. Sound quality is nothing less than exceptional. The material covers a wide spectrum of the Dream's back catalogue and compares well to the Froese/Franke/Schmoelling years. TD had access to all of the latest technology with manufacturers lining up to have their newest gear road-tested by these pioneers So you hear crisp, digital synths and sequencers with occasionally irritating drum-machine (the only criticism I have).

There is rather a lot of 'filler' in Tangerine Dream's extensive catalogue - but this isn't in that category. Well-worth seeking out if you're a TD fan looking for a treat.
