The frustrating thing with D-S is that their early stuff (ie the first 2 albums) were excellent. Simply recorded, with really great song-structure, shame they went so commercial so early on, but it's a trap many other (originally) great bands fall into. Saying that, one of the much later albums - On Every Street - is one I listen to regularly.
The early Level 42 material was excellent too but they went to the same way.

If you like the first Dire Straits album then I would recommend getting the 'Live At the BBC' CD which is an excellent live performance of the same (plus a couple of other tracks) recorded before they hit the big time.
