Live music is, I think, fundamental. There have always been artists for whom performing live has been the core of what they do. Up until the late sixties, it was the only way to get yourself known and have a musical career. Then came the record deal. One benefit for the punter of the internet music download age is that artists can make more money from touring and self promotion than chasing the record deal. That means that the availability of quality live music has increased. Still probably only a faint patch on what it was in the early sixties, I guess, but better imho nontheless.

Last night Steve 'Boltz' Bolton, music and chat.
Plenty of great stories from his days with Atomic Rooster, the Who and Paul Young.

Billy Joel last night - good but he was better last time 7 years ago but big venue gigs don't do that much for me unless you are making lots of noise e.g. NIN

The Apples last Saturday. Third time (and best) of the year. Noted Eddie Reader tomorrow, Joanne Shaw Taylor later this year and The Bad Shepherds. If only I had the energy.

Just home from Christy Moore. Still going strong after many years, and still a great performer. There were only 120 there. It was a fund raiser to buy instruments for poor kids in Cuba.

Kate Rusby in York at the weekend. What a great show, and she's a great front-woman. Not to my mind the perfect balance between the music and the song, the band were very tightly reined in. But it's the first gig I've been to in a fair old while (young kids, y'know) and it was really, really enjoyable.
