Welcome back, hope you had a restful holiday.
Will do some furniture shifting once my Christmas guests have gone home.

All speakers need fiddling back and forward to get the bass balance right.

I haven't started taking apart the Goodmans but thought I would check their resistance at the input screws and got a reading of 3.4 ohms on one speaker and 2.7 on the other. Is this significant?

Does the discrepancy suggest a problem with one of the drive units or could it be ancient wiring and crossover components?

Open up, disconnect the drivers, measure them individually, if they all match then problem is wiring or crossover (probably rotten joint), if they don't match then there is a problem in the coil of the driver with the non standard reading, (probably been over driven).

Have opened up the low impedance speaker and tested each drive unit. The two tweeters and mid-units seem matched but the four bass units vary quite a bit. They are on one side of the speaker 3.8 ohms and 2.2 ohms , the other side 2.7 and 0.8. In addition it looks as if one of them is shorted out as both leads are joined to the same terminal.
I am still trying to work out the crossover and wiring as it seems a bit complicated with 5 capacitors and 3 inductors but no resistors.
It looks like there has been some diy already.

Sound like they have been botched, you have a job on your hands. If still in time it may well be worth putting a claim in at ebay and paypal as not as described.

Hi Richard
The time for a claim is out but I have contacted the seller anyway to see what he says, as on the description he said he had them for a while and all drive units were working and the speakers sounded stunning.
If I am left with them what would I need to do to bring them back to standard as they do seem interesting.

I have opened up the other cabinet and checked the bass drivers. 3 of them are measured at 2.6 ohms and the 4th was 3.7. The high one was also wired up with both leads going to one tab. This suggests that someone thought this was a good idea, I wonder what he was trying to do.
