Re: MC Phono Stage Bake-off
Nick stage well both of them are very good, I would not fault anyone prefering them, But for the mo I will keep my opinion about that to me. Regarding the Fireys everyone of them lost music lost detail smudged the sound stage, did not hold the musical timing correctly and sounded like hi-fi not music compared with both Nicks and the NVAs.
But they were all a bloody site better than the Arkless abortion.

Re: MC Phono Stage Bake-off
It would be nice to hear other opinions of what went on today. I look forward to them.
Regarding the Doc's lambasting on Bigman80's opinions, and they were only opinions, does the Doc not follow his own forum ethos ?
I mean "This forum is different - here we do not allow people to challenge what people hear," ?

We also say no shilling and fabricated lies, because that is what this is, unless..... well not worth getting into that.
Four and half hours driving to walk into read that bunch of lies is just infuriating - so I have infuriated. I may calm down in a bit. It is scam to try and recreate reality, I wondered why he left early, well it was to get this in and plant a seed before anyone else posts.
We have seen these games played out at AoS as well.

A good number of ears at this event, which adds to the value of the feedback. I'm sure a meaningful picture will emerge.

Re: MC Phono Stage Bake-off
I disagree with Bigman80.
The worst phono amplification on the day was provided by my Akai AA-8080 receiver. The rest of the phono stages were a step above this. The Akai sounded fuzzy compared to them. Just as well it was the cheapest there and included a pre-amp, power amp and tuner. For me it was nice to hear what you get with a modern dedicated phono stage compared to the built in phono section of a vintage Japanese solid state receiver.
On the day, to my ears, there was one phono stage that was able to make the amplification between the cartridge and the speakers do a magical disappearing act - where it sounded as if there was nothing there - just a direct connection between the TT and speakers. And that was the circa £1700 prototype NVA phono stage. This is also some praise to Nick's power amps as they were able to join in on this disappearing act.
