If you've got halfway presentable stuff you want rid of, you could do worse than give these people a look - https://www.freecycle.org/ - before you bin it. Stu. You might be helping someone out. I know Mike over at TAS has used them a lot.

If you've got any questions, drop him a PM over there and tell him I sent you. I'm sure he'll be happy to point you in the right direction. It's better than just sending it to a landfill if someone can use it.

There's nothing wrong with a bit of DIY. Better than a crap shag, or so I've heard

My little system is set up and playing music as I lounge on a sofa listening to Cymande.

Image

Two little boxes, a pair of speakers and some stands I had knocking about. AP20 is sat on top of the dvd player/free view box and the tiny wiim pro is sat to the right of those.

Speakers are B&W CM1- rear ported but do have a simple xover made up of a single inductor for the low pass filter and a single capacitor for the high pass filter. I'm using a 2 metre set of LS6 and some nva interconnects but not TIS as they won't go on the recessed phono sockets round the back of the wiim.

I'm having a tremendous amount of fun listening to this. Only listen at TV volumes these days. This system goes deeper in the bass than the JBL charge 5 and has stereo separation. I don't think I need to go any further into the realms of hifi obsession, this is quite good enough. Job done.

Currently playing with the wiim's EQ :shhh: What fun.

My speaker stands might need a bit of work. The top plate is too small to bolt the speakers to if using the threaded inserts on the bottom of the speakers. With a 13 and 9 year old in the house I fear for these (£500 when new) speakers safety. They are in mint condition and I inherited them from a friend who passed away quite a few years ago. So they have sentimental value and I will never part with them . The veneer is awesome.

So I need a new top plate with holes to enable the speakers to be bolted to it. I've got some aluminum plate for that. I have filled the two round tubes with grit sand. Not for any sonic reasons just to try and make them harder to topple over. Could make a bigger base plate as well but that might lead to positioning problems.

There is probably nothing optimal about this system and its setup. Going back to the old me I could pick this thing apart. I am not going to do that because it really is good enough and I refuse to get drawn back into the constant analysis, obsessing and tinkering. It's a sign that something is not quite right mentally or emotionally.
