Re: Introduce Yourselves
Welcome, 'Tweet'
Get a listen to as much different kit as you can. The NVA kit is superb value for music per pound. There's a loan scheme for the starter kit with pre / power and cables. That could be your first port of call. You may be near members here who will give you a listen to their set up. There are also bake-offs from time to time that are worth getting to. I'd also look at the secondhand market, especially for speakers - there are so many bookshelf types available at less than half of their new price. You might even look at improving a pair of old speakers using 'Doc Mods' (lots in the archive here about how to do it).
Hope this helps.
PS. At recent bake-off, Andy-831 mentioned some Q Acoustics speakers that he thought were terrific value.

Re: Introduce Yourselves
Yeah I have a pair of Q Acoustic 3020 speakers in my office system, which can be picked up aroung the £100 mark on ebay. Good value for money and a reasonable quality speaker for not a lot of dosh.

Re: Introduce Yourselves
I thought the op was looking for active speakers. Never heard these, but alternatives to Quad.

Re: Introduce Yourselves
Thanks for the suggestions. The acoustic energy actives look good so they go on my list.
Back in the 90s I auditioned the NVA integrated statement and as good as it sounded at first, the result was that it highlighted the shortcomings in all my other components. Making me realise that if I were to keep it, the entire system would need replacing. A Morgan Audio Systems Int/Power bi-wired into Elac speakers was chosen in the end.
Have to say I loved the look of the statement amp. Unique.

NVA amps, speakers, interconnects & speaker cables produce the music.

Re: Introduce Yourselves
NVA is kind to good components but it's transparency does reveal shortcomings all too well.
Give the P20/A20 loan scheme a go and see if you like the sound. If you're going for a completely new rig you could start with an NVA amp and build around it (Cubes ???).

Re: Introduce Yourselves
Hi Si, I think i remember you from pfm. I thought you used to mod the hell out of Naim 323 phono stage boards. In fact i think you once sent me some dale 15R for the 323mc front end.
NVA phono stages are so much better than the old Naim ones it is ridiculous . Stu
