Main thing is : it's new and it's free! But when I get a W10 Windows Phone running then it should get more interesting.

I don’t believe that it's free for a very long time. When they get large amount of people using it they just notify that from this point on you have to pay for using it.

Cost of Android OS = £0
Cost of Linux (many flavours) OS = £0
Cost of OSX = £0
Cost of Chrome OS = £0
Cost of IOS OS = £0

Spot the trend.

The computing paradigm on which Microsoft based it's success, which was the PC OS and selling into business is arguably finished. Microsoft has been playing catch up ever since it missed the importance of the start of the internet.

More operating systems are now 'sold' with Smart TVs, Tablets, Mobile Phones than with PCs and this trend will increase with the 'internet of things' (an OS for your car, for you fridge and so on). Computing from mainframe to PC was a business/enterprise thing; it is now predominantly a consumer thing.

Microsoft has less than 3% of the mobile phone market.

Can Microsoft afford not to give away it's OS?

Maybe not. But do they understand it? Here in Finland we whatched on first row how Nokia crashed down just because they think that nobody can beat them. Then came first i-phone and rest is history...

iPhone 2007
Microsoft buy Nokia (a leading Mobile phone brand) 2013
Microsoft sell Nokia 2014
Nokia now not a leading mobile phone brand

Do Microsoft understand?

Microsoft had the vision of a single OS which ran everything and they produced Windows CE and Windows Embedded.

In the background was open source. Then came Linux and, from that, Android.

Do most web servers and web sites run on a Windows or a Linux derivative? Does your Smart TV run on a Windows derivative or a Linux derivative? Do most SmartPhones run on Windows or a Linux derivative? It all happened while Microsoft were trying to make it happen.

Microsoft intensifies data collection on Windows 7 and 8 systems

Update to my last post about windows 10 etc this very intresting peice of reading is well worth taking the time to read and inform yourself of just what is going on regarding your personal / private date etc .
You may or may not care but i think the knowledge should be yours.

http://www.ghacks.net/2015/08/28/micros ... 8-systems/

IMO everyone should take as much responsibilty as they can for there own data and not allow the corporate giants to use it for who knows what ?
The LARGE print giveth - and the small print taketh away.
