May's problem is not whether she has a valid mandate (which can be argued either way, so choose the answer you prefer based on your own views). Her problem is managing the process. She has a tiny majority and most of her own MPs were remainers. They won't vote against, but they will try to extract concessions. If May is seen to be dancing to their tune then she will be seen as weak. If she declines to offer concessions and the remainers are able to delay and force concessions further along the process...again, she looks weak. A general election could give a much larger majority and take these problems away...but the other risks it brings are very significant.
