Re: Anyone flooded
Luckily we have not had the floods here but I always feel very sorry for anybody who has been flooded out and always think about what I would do. It can take months for everything to dry out, and maybe never the same again.

Re: Anyone flooded
I spent a large part of my childhood in the Calder Valley in W. Yorks, and seeing the images from familiar places like Hebden Bridge and Mytholmroyd is shocking.

Re: Anyone flooded
I live well away from any watercourse but on the side of a very porous hill so, other than the cellar (which need constant pumping anyway) no.
Sowerby Bridge was hit - and that's a first in my memory. And, of course, the repeat of the floods at Mythomroyd and Hebden. I was listening to all the news from those places and a friend told me his place in Otley (next to the river Wharfe) had been hit and I discover that Leeds City Centre has been flooded - I've seen it suffer because of heavy rain before - shutting many roads down in the centre - but I haven't seen the Aire break it's banks before. But it doesn't stop there. The flooding has hit communications (either because of power cuts or flooding of kit) and in York they've had problems with every sort of communications - wireless communications and landlines (of course, your cell phone is only wireless to the nearest cell then the message goes into a wired network).
Lots of stories up here about people pitching in and helping out.
Everyone up here is hoping that the rains forecast for later in the week.

Re: Anyone flooded
I now live very close to a major river (The Waal) and the flood defences here are in the process of being strengthened. We get high water almost every year when the snow on the Alps melts.

Those of you who live in the south east will find this page interesting.
https://www.gov.uk/guidance/the-thames-barrier
Particularly the stats on how often the barrier was closed in 2014. Almost as many times as the previous 10 years.
The Foss barrier unable to cope with the volume of water we've been seeing.
Whether we agree on the causes or not, the climate is certainly changing and weather events becoming more serious. Time everyone woke up to that fact, carrying on with our heads in the sand is not an answer.
