Cryogenics

Unread post by Dr Bunsen Honeydew »

OK I instinctively think it is a load of old :Bllocks: so I have never tried it or been interested in doing so. BUT I am open minded enough to realise that I could be wrong even though my very being says it must be nonsense. FFS on AoS they are talking about freezing valves and it makes them sound better :-? , it is glass, vacuum and wire, what the feck can freezing do to it.

Discuss!

Doesn't lowering the temperature improve conductivity? Superconductors appear to need to Be at around absolute zero to work properly. And improving conductivity ought to improve an audio system's musicality.

Only problem is that to achieve anything like these sort of temperatures would involve large quantities of liquid nitrogen in your living room. Not very practical.

But hold on, that is *using* the equipment while under the frozen condition, no one saying that in hi-fi, no one has nitrogen refridgeration gear round their valve amps, it wouldn't work, the valves would break / burst if they did. This is dipping in liquid nitrogen and then they sound wonderful from then on even if running at burn you valve temps. :shifty:

It is much lower temps than that Jammy, fridges or freezers don't do cryogenics.

I have an open mind on this.
Cryogenics of metal components seems to be well recognized in sports cars/engineering as a way of changing the crystalline structure of metals and alloys.
Perhaps "deep" cold treatment may be a way to change the structure of conductors sufficiently to affect how electrons are conducted through metallic bonds

Exactly, super conductivity https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Superconductivity I understand, better conductivity (or anything) due to cryogenics I don't.
