You need the power supply, your wall mount supply is useless.

The Doc is right here. I couldn't believe the difference buying a better power supply made!Dr Bunsen Honeydew wrote: ↑Tue Feb 20, 2018 11:15 am You need the power supply, your wall mount supply is useless.
This may well be true, but what I was saying is that the improved power supply wrought huge benefits *with the cheap-and-cheerful DAC,* whereby it ended up sounding better than the one I bought to replace it.Fretless wrote: ↑Tue Feb 20, 2018 1:56 pm DAC's love lots of clean power and a solid LPSU will definitely provide better SQ.
It isn't the whole story though. I have 2 Cambridge units here, a DacMagic 100 and it's bigger brother the DacMagic Plus, both powered by the same model SBooster LPSU - the higher-spec model significantly outperforms the cheaper one.
PSU's are necessary but don't remove sonic differences between DAC's.
You don't know until you try it. And not a £130 fuse but a DAC costing a fiver. What is the opposite phrase to slurping rip-off.Fretless wrote: ↑Tue Feb 20, 2018 1:56 pm DAC's love lots of clean power and a solid LPSU will definitely provide better SQ.

I tried the Qutest out of a wall socket but not for long as I did not like what I was hearing. The sound was restricted and compressed. There also seemed to be less volume for the same setting. When I went back to the BMU it was like shakles being removed. I know I have had mains, but I was not expecting the difference to be so great.
I have had the same experience here. I took the Chord's SMPS supply out of the BMU feed as I thought that it would be putting noise into the rest of the system and negating the benefits of the BMU, but the result was thin and harsh compared to before. Changing the Chord SMPS for a linear psu has made another worthwhile improvement....CN211276 wrote: ↑Wed Feb 21, 2018 11:30 amI tried the Qutest out of a wall socket but not for long as I did not like what I was hearing.
