As far as I know, John Harrison tried various solutions to get a pendulum regulated clock working reliably at sea through his H1, H2 and H3 clocks only to be convinced (and win the Longitude prize) by the spring balance regulator which was the basis of H4. So to my mind, Harrison solved his problem...
