I think cracking in green oak is caused by the wood drying out too swiftly. This causes distortion (all HiFi fans wish to avoid this I feel!) I have a mate who is a cabinet maker by trade and I think he used wax or waxy sealant to try and slow this process - I'll ask him when I see him next and repo...

The Zoroastrian way was to wait for birds of prey to dispose of carcasses, but unfortunately, it is largely no longer sustainable with human drugs (such as Diclofenac) polluting the food chain and causing near extinction of the birds. Most are now either cremated or buried in lime pits.
