Re: Attempting to solve hum on p80/s300

What about noisy mains ? Is the humming more or less at certain times of the day or on certain days ? Fridges, freezers, washing machines ? Industrial usage in your neighbourhood ? Solar panels ? All things that RD used to moan about as NVA amps are sensitive to that. I have an open living room/kit...

Re: Attempting to solve hum on p80/s300

20230906_110826.jpg I spent the day moving things around. This is about the best I can do for component separation, any cables that have to cross have been crossed at 90 degrees.. my digital gear is to the right of the pic but the hum is still there. When I next get chance I will play around with a...

Re: Attempting to solve hum on p80/s300

I also have a Topping D30 in use and it is a very basic (but surprisingly good) little DAC that can generate unwanted 'noise' when idle. My recommendation would be to get a newer-generation Topping or similar (SMSL, Sabaj, Loxjie etc.) unit that will improve your SQ and have a better build with reg...

Re: Attempting to solve hum on p80/s300

To save starting another post can anyone advise on rca interconnect length? I'm thinking about separating most if my sources and my DAC has a high output so I'm thinking about a 5m cable... Would this be OK? I would also run longer lengths from the cassette player but I use a buffer with it so that ...

Re: Attempting to solve hum on p80/s300

Thanks again for all the replies. I had another play earlier and found that it is a mixture of environment and noise on the mains. I took the earth cable connected to the phono earth on the back of the pre and touched the rca cables that came from my cassette player (which was unplugged from the mai...

Re: Attempting to solve hum on p80/s300

Thanks all for the replies. I tried the amp this morning with just the speakers connected and no pre and I Unplugged both the TT and DAC power supply it was quieter, the main buzzy sort of hum has gone but I am left with a very quiet hum if I put my ear right next to the speaker. I am wondering abou...

Fretless wrote: Thu Aug 31, 2023 10:38 pm Could the cables running from P80 to power amps be picking up some interference? Are there any mains cables close to them?
Yeah unfortunately there is a lot of cables lurking behind the gear and I'm really limited for space

Re: Attempting to solve hum on p80/s300

Thanks. I use a Topping D30 which I think has a switching power supply. I will have to check tomorrow to see if its on the same block as the amp. Its funny, when the dac is selected the hum disappears at min and max volume. I will have to disconnect it completely from the mains to see if it helps, s...

Attempting to solve hum on p80/s300

I'm hoping someone will be able to help.. I've noticed hum on all inputs (including those not in use) on my p80 with the exception of cd input which is connected to my dac... If the volume is at minimum or maximum the hum disappears and its dead silent (tdk pot) It doesn't matter if all inputs are d...

Re: CD Transport

I use a 6000CDT and love it. The slot mechanism is a worry for some but I've used it every day for a year or so and never had any issues or scratches. I'd say that the slot mechanism is one of its best features, it seems very robust. The only downsides over a dedicated player are lack of features li...
