Re: Compression

I see it as a downward spiral. Dynamic compression used because so few people listen via hi-fi systems. Low interest in buying hi-fi because almost all modern music is so dynamically compressed.

Re: Compression

The Circus and the Nightwhale by Steve Hackett has a DR of 11. This is not as bad as the DR of 6 on Ace Frehley's Origins, Vol 2. But it's still a rather mediocre and audibly compressed production for an artist that performed on Genesis' Genesis (DR 16). As for that article, I disagree with the bit ...

Re: Moving to 4.0 or 5.0 or 7.0 from 2.0

Bought a used Denon 3500H off Facebook Marketplace for £320. Initial thoughts are that it sounds tonally leaner than the Marantz - and OK overall. Maybe I need to fiddle with the default, post auto-setup EQ settings? I'll see how I get on when I get my next couple of rental blu rays later this week....

Something to drive the Dynaudio 62's?

Re: Moving to 4.0 or 5.0 or 7.0 from 2.0

I bought a Marantz SR6010 for £480. I've initially set it up as a 7.0 system. Using EV Sentrys as fronts, a Linn Isobarik as the centre speaker, Saras as rears and Heybrook HB1's as sides. After watching an Our Brand is Crisis DVD on it my children declared that it was a waste of money. We'l...

Re: Dutch Elections

Sounds like a pretty good form of anarchy.
The Netherlands is a pretty well organised and industrious place. The people there can carry on with their lives OK for a while, even if there's no clear set of people right at the top of the political hierarchy.

Re: New Mark Knopfler album

Meat Loaf's Bat Out Of Hell illustrates that they were quite capable of producing mediocre recordings in the 1970's.

Moronic music biz producers have been around forever. The difference being that in the 21st century they're all wedded to their dynamic compression machines.

Re: New Mark Knopfler album

Indeed. Why in 2024 is it so difficult for Knopfler to release an album that's at least as well recorded and produced as Communique from 1979?
