Re: HiFi Challenge
Do you want the best sound quality for your money, or do you want something that looks nice and isn't too big and sounds good enough? How big is your room? Would you be happy with a huge pair of speakers in there? Do you want something new or is something 20 to 50 years old OK as long as it sounds r...

Re: HiFi Challenge
I'm sure there's no single best CD player / amp / speaker combination as there are so many thousands to choose from. Would you like to host a bake-off Selby to see who can come up with the best sub-£1000 combination? I could bring a Urei 6290 amp with EV Sentry III speakers for a £670 amp and speake...

Re: Turntable basics
A lot of vintage hi-fi does come with leads and terminals that look crap by todays standards. In my experience this hasn't stopped them from sounding good. It's up to you. You can change the power lead and signal leads if you want, or you can leave them original if you want.

Re: Introduce Yourselves
So why don't the police catch errant bikers by doing a Steve McQueen from the Great Escape with a bit of wire tied between 2 lamp-posts? Are the police so busy that they don't have time to watch the TV every Boxing Day?

Re: Imagine
I'm not sure that you need to have £100 million to buy a hi-fi system that's as good as any on the planet. I have a theory that someone on an average UK wage can do it over the course of a few years. If that theory is correct then even if I had £100 million pounds I wouldn't go out and buy the most ...

Re: Turntable basics
Main thing is to avoid vibration from the speakers getting into the tt. Either by distance away from the speakers or suitable support such as wallshelf on sturdy wall. 4 metres is a long distance for the tt to phono amp. The lead that comes with your tt will probably be about 1.5 metres long. I like...

Re: Turntable basics
A Jico SAS stylus for the Shure might be one possibility, or a new Denon 103 or 110 another. For phono amplification an NVA would be a fine choice. On a limited budget a 2nd hand / vintage pre-amp or integrated with built-in phono amplification might be another choice. Again maybe one of the classic...

http://www.thevintageknob.org/ and http://www.audio-heritage.jp/ as well as Google are good places to start a bit of internet research into interesting turntables as well as other vintage hi-fi components.

Re: Your last listen
I like Fairport Convention and Richard Thompson's solo work too. Been listening to some 50p car boot CD's. The Verve - Urban Hymns. Nice songs but cloudy and compressed recording quality when compared to The Diary of Alicia Keys that I put on after as well as the Corrs - Forgiven, Not Forgotten. Wit...
