Re: HS2 opinions

Mothballing of lines would not have served Beeching's purpose which was to shift traffic to roads to benefit road haulage. A common misapprehension. Beeching just did what he was asked to do by Ernest Marples, who was minister of transport at the time. His (Marples) business was Marples Ridgeway, a...

Re: HS2 opinions

I believe the Chiltern line was upgraded not that many years ago, and that some people prefer that route to Birmingham. Having seen a cab ride video of the line after upgrading, and also videos of the upgrading work itself, the line is not really suitable for high speed, although the scenery might ...

Re: HS2 opinions

Upgrading the Chiltern Line would be less expensive and of greater utility than HS2 but less exciting. I believe the Chiltern line was upgraded not that many years ago, and that some people prefer that route to Birmingham. Having seen a cab ride video of the line after upgrading, and also videos of...

Re: HS2 opinions

Apparently more of the public are against hs2 than are in favour. Some are on here but they remain quiet. Do you think that statement is about HS2 per se OR about the cost of HS2 ? Sometimes you have to factor in the likely costs involved if projects like this don't go ahead.(in the long term) When...

Re: Politics, Punk, and the Police.

From personal experience I think the attitude of the police has a lot to do with a person's age, as well as the colour of their skin. In my younger days I used to get stopped for no reason on suspicion of being in possesion of drugs and even burglary. Roll the clock on nearly forty years and things...

Re: HS2 opinions

I have read many things on the STOPHS2 website, one thing they mention is that engineers did not properly survey and many problems have arisen that were not costed in. One of those is the extensive mining subsistence that has occurred in Nottinghamshire and Yorkshire. That could be one reason why t...

Re: HS2 opinions

The bit that is really needed has been scrapped, the bit that is just window dressing stays, sounds like a political decision. Meanwhile we have had new length of road that replaces a section that could be a mirror image of itself. Realignment of the railway bridge further up the hill would have mad...

Useless piece of information. You can actually see the sign, from above, on Apple maps.

Re: HS2 opinions

Are you trying to tell me that St Albans isn't in the North? The answer to this depends on who you ask and in the case of politicians why they think you are asking the question. Only death is a certainty, taxes depend on how rich you are and everything else ~ who knows 🤷 Definitely not me. Now I am...

Re: HS2 opinions

I hope you know, Watford Gap is some distance from the Watford I assume you are talking about, it's nearer Birmingham than Watford. It's named after the small village of Watford, not the Watford north of London https://www.bing.com/maps?q=watford+gap+services&cvid=993aecace7e745d38619d1a9f7a932...
