Re: The reality of magazine reviews
I haven’t bought any Hi-Fi equipment for over 20 years. Microphones, amplifiers, mixers etc. but no domestic Hi-Fi, nor do I have any plans to do so, unless my tuner has to be replaced. Then I will buy a used one of the same model. It's funny, as a bass player, I've got absolute confidence in audit...

Re: The reality of magazine reviews
Anybody who is on this forum was guilty at some point Absolutely, replacing a perfectly good piece of equipment with something else because of a perceived improvement is pretty common. In Hi-Fi, objective analysis is so flawed that it is impossible to determine whether something is an improvement. ...

Re: 'Real' bass - ported vs sealed speakers
Domestic speakers are going to be played in a room. The designer knows that. So why not design a speaker that works well with a room? An excellent question, particularly given that speakers are tested in anechoic chambers rather than in real rooms. Additionally, it appears that designers are attemp...

Re: Power cables and fuses
The Richard Dunn stance of having captive power leads makes a lot of sense. What's the point of having the World's best power lead only for it to go through an IEC plug and socket at the back of your amp / source? And then there's the UK ring type mains layout... And UK type wall sockets and plugs....

Re: 'Real' bass - ported vs sealed speakers
Some years ago a violinist friend brought her violin around and played it in my lounge. The first thing to say was that it was loud, very loud. This was just one violin in a relatively small room. Real (live) music is much louder than most Hi-Fi systems are played at. Another observation is that som...

Re: 'Real' bass - ported vs sealed speakers
I have absolutely no doubt that there are ported speakers that cannot be tamed whatever one does with placement. Equally I expect that there are IBs that are just as bad. If we were to identify those products and discount them I think many people would have difficulty determining, in a blind compari...

Re: 'Real' bass - ported vs sealed speakers
The issue however isn't the port but the resonant frequency, if the port resonates at a frequency within the range of human hearing there is every possibility that it will "honk". I am not aware of any ported speakers in the history of the known universe that have a port resonant frequenc...

Re: 'Real' bass - ported vs sealed speakers
The way I see it is this: Every enclosure has a resonant frequency, or several because we have holes containing resonant devices, and adding a port adds another one, or more. The issue however isn't the port but the resonant frequency, if the port resonates at a frequency within the range of human h...

Re: Software Defined Radio (SDR)
From my, very abbreviated, research on the subject it would appear that you may already be using SDR as it has uses in 3G communications. As you will be aware, 3G is old hat these days.
