If you lived in a universe that had a very martial culture and extremely high levels of technology. And if you had extensive and intensive training in hand to hand combat involving blades. And you were an important member of the aristocracy. And if every male person around you had short hair. And you had parents that were very concerned for your safety. That had gone to great efforts to prepare you as much as possible for all eventualities. Would you have long hair? Or be allowed to have long hair. So long that it flopped over your eyes?

So why does Timothy Chalamet as Paul Atreides have long hair throughout Dune?

Apart from a few other things that make no sense, it's a reasonable film. One that follows the book closely.

Agreed it's not a bad effort, certainly better than the Lynch's miss fire and in a different universe to the Sci Fi channels ministry of silly hats version.

I've bought the 3D Blu-ray of Dune whenever I get around to it.

On the music documentary aide The Death & Resurrection Show about Jaz Coleman/killing Joke is a great hoot, depending on your view they are either visionaries or complete fruitloops, I love their music and have a sympathy for their apocalyptic visions, so I'm a mixture of both.

Stiv Bators - No Regrets, No Remorse on Netflix is well worth a watch, the rather sad tale of the Dead Boys, Lords of the New Church front man. One things for certain he lived his short life to the fullest extent. Saw the Lords relatively early on, I don't recall too much (oops did drink a tad too much that night) but I seem to recall they were quite good fun.

It's a cracker of a film. Well edited, tense, believable, true to life, thought and emotion provoking.

A film I found on Netflix that is both exciting and hilarious is 'Army of Thieves'.




Timid small-town bank teller Sebastian leads a solitary, uneventful existence against the backdrop of an unheard-of virus outbreak in Las Vegas. Fascinated by locks and safes, the enthusiastic YouTuber and theoretical safe-cracker will get the chance to shine when mysterious Gwendoline enlists his help to pull off the heist of the century: crack a quartet of impenetrable, Richard Wagner-inspired safes. However, as Sebastian and Gwendoline's band of thieves embark on a frenzied mission across Europe, obsessive Interpol agent Delacroix is hot on their trail, and things are starting to look bleak in Sin City. Now, in the face of impossible odds, one man is about to write history. Is insecure Sebastian destined to become a legend?

This is a well-made comedy-thriller with lots of geeky twists and is thoroughly entertaining.

It serves as a prequel to Zac Snyder's film 'Army of the Dead' where safecracker Sebastian / Ludwig Dieter is enlisted to break open a vault in Las Vegas which just happens to be inhabited by a 'Zombie Apocalypse'. This, however, is NOT a film I would recommend as it it cliched, gory, silly and thoroughly unpleasant (unless you happen to like Zombie films - I don't)





Oh .... and has anybody else seen Netflix's new blockbuster 'Heart of Stone' with the delectable Gal Gadot. A mix of James Bond and Mission Impossible that is remarkably similar to Prime Video's 'Citadel' series.

My verdict: entertaining but not essential.

Class (BLU-RAY) - realistic and engrossing portrayal of being a teacher in an inner city secondary school in France
Pleasure (BLU-RAY) - a film about the sleazy world of Californian pornography
The Quiet Girl (BLU-RAY) - got me crying at the end, which is a rarity for me.
The Big Hit - Charming prison film / kind of a sequel to The Producers
Trial and Error - a reminder of how great the classic Ealing comedies were
Compartment No. 6 (BLU-RAY) - a film that ploughs its' own furrow
Nightmare Alley (BLU-RAY) - Not Del Torro's best film, but still watchable
Summer Time Machine Blues (BLU-RAY) - charming Japanese student time travel comedy
Drive My Car (BLU-RAY) - I'm biased because of memories of my Saab 900
The Phantom of the Open (BLU-RAY) - uplifting film

Borderline between I enjoyed and OK
Three Thousand Years of Longing (BLU-RAY)
Hit the Road (BLU-RAY) - an observation of family life in Iran. Tighter editing woud have made this film more enjoyable
Boss Level - Groundhog Day meets Kill Bill
The Millionairess - didn't enjoy it as much as Trial and Error.
The Outfit (BLU-RAY) - had a theatre play brought to the screen feel about it. Nice leading actor performance
Once Upon a Time in the West (BLU-RAY) - that opening scence. Rest of the film doesn't quite maintain that level of quality. I visited a couple of the filming locations near Guadix in July.

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent (BLU-RAY) - the premise of the film didn't work for me. Borderline shit film.
Operation Mincemeat (BLU-RAY) - I'd already read about this in a book
RocknRolla (BLU-RAY), Wrath of Man, Revolver - Guy Ritchie doing his thing

Found it boring or didn't bother finishing it
Benediction - boring
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (BLU-RAY) - Nonsensical all powerful magic stuff combined with a nonsensical plot.
Nothing Underneath (BLU-RAY) - cheapo 1980's Italian nonsense
Rubikon - as forgettable as a collection of metal plates bolted together to make a sub-assembly
