.........................................

DARKLANDS

The Welsh Wickerman.

Great movie.

Shit.

Great movie.

Nah...shit.

Great. ( ? )

.............................

CROOKED HOUSE (2016, UK)

Mark Gatiss attempting a "Ghost Story For Christmas"-style, but nowhere as good as Gordon Clark.
Slow (which is usually good in a ghost story - but not here) and LONG.

3 stories in one : city house way back in days of Henry VIII is cursed by necromancer's diddlings.Same house in Victorian/Edwardian time and in present time.

Stars Phillip Jackson (character actor you see in all sorta mystery roles, but who is perhaps best known as Inspector Jap in the Poirot series) and Lee Ingleby (young partner of inspector George Gently)

.................................

THE TRACTATE MIDDOTH (2014, uk)

Mark Gatiss (League of Gentlemen & Sherlock) production done in the exact style of Gordon Clark's classic 80s "A Ghost Story For Christmas"series
This too is from a short story by M.R.James, the well known supernatural writer.
James' stories usually has found old antiquities levelling a curse on the finder.

Like the Clark adaptations, Gatiss knows that an effective ghost film should have basically no film score (or minor at least) and few characters.

Eleanor Bron , who worked with Peter Cook & Dudley Moore, has a small role here.

Okay audiofool homoze. here yaw goes:

EVERYTHING IS ILLUMINATED ( 2015, US)

young obsessive, past- collecting Jew goes to Ukraine countryside in seach of woman what saved his grandpa's ass from Nazis in 1940s.

Predictable, with common tropes but I enjoyed it cos so much is in Russian dialogue.

Frodo (Elijah Wood)

The old Ukrainian calls his crazy bitch ("sue-kah") dog, Sammy Davis Junior Junior. :)

...........................................

RUBBER (2006, France)

An old tire in the dessert discovers that it has telepathic powers.

Plodding, basically plotless.Goes round in circles.

.......................

CROWHAVEN FARM (US, (70's?)

Mericains once again try their hand at folk-horror and fail miserably.

They don't seem to get it: in this genre, the landscape & way it is filmed is very important .(Like in the Brit folk-horror classic, "Claw of The Devil" a ploughman tilling the field turns over a frightening bone. From then on you get occasional shots where the camera was actually filming peeping out of holes in the ground so that you are reminded where this evil came from.) The landscape has to be foreboding - not just any farm property that happens to be closest to the film studio.

Plot is that couple inherit farm steading in Brandon not far from Salem, Massachusets. Turns out witchcraft was practiced here too. Walking the field one morning, Hope Lange has a vision of here ancestor being put to death by added weight of stones.

Predictable and frankly, I don't know why this came recommended.

Yet again, actor Carradine is wasted in a minor role.

HOLY TERRORS (2017,UK)

6 weird tales of Arthur Machen.

Here is an aside:
our lad, Engypoos was on Mastermind with his chosen subject - of course - Mark E. Smith (The Fall).
When the question was put to him, "What author of short stories and novels was Smith a big fanboyo of?" Engy started writhing and, looking like he just pished himself, peeped-out: 'Steven K...K...King?"

(You can see it all on youtube . (He is wearing his mod monkeysuit). But its disquieting.)

SHADOWS
This was a BBC supernatural children's drama series that ran for three seasons in mid-70s.

From series 2 ('76) I just watched:

DARK ENCOUNTER by Newbury award-winning children's author, Susan Cooper who wrote the 5 book , "Dark Is Rising" series

THE INHERITANCE A retired gamekeeper, knowing he is to die soon, informs his grandson about the now almost-forgotten horn dance. The mother wants the son to escape the mud and become an insurance salesman, but the old man would like the boy to continue the lonely life of being at one with the forest and deer.

THE THIRTEENTH TALE (2013,UK)
Blind Chile is halfway through watching this supernatural, alledgedly gothic -but I don't see it that way - film. When I just become aware that sourpuss-faced actress, Olivia Coleman, has just won the 2019 acadamy award for best actress. I've seen her in drawnout shit like Broadchurch and Bletchly Circle and she never smiles. Guess that serious look is her trademark.
No idea wot she just won an award for.

Anyways I'm halfway through this movie and nothing particularly supernatural has happened. Rather disappointing so far.
.............................

HAY FORK AND BILL HOOK (UK, '69? ) witchcraft in the farmlands again only this time black & white.
