Re: Sci-Fidelity
Watched the Star Trek 'Strange New Worlds' / 'Lower Decks' crossover episode 'Those Old Scientisits' (TOS ) last night.
What a blast! Stunning. Directed by Jonathan 'Riker' Frakes this is a story that references so many Trek incarnations that you just lose count. It is hilarious - but not just all belly-laughs, there are also a few poignant and intimate moments. It also reveals the embarrassing side of time-travel in a rather Doctor-Who-style way.
'Strange New Worlds' is proving itself to be one of the best Trek series - ever! I see myself having to get this on DVD so I can watch it again and again and again ......

Re: Sci-Fidelity
Last night the eagerly-awaited 'musical' episode of Strange New Worlds (SNW) aired and it was spectacular.
'Subspace Rhapsody' has the crew caught in a cosmic anomaly which causes them to express their deepest feelings as songs. Both hilarious and heartbreaking as they cannot hide their real emotions anymore....
.... and it works!
SNW is bulldozing over genre boundaries and creating a whole new mythology for itself. A prequel to the classic original series with Kirk, Spock, Uhura and the rest diving into tales that explore humanity and personality.
Simply incredible and a 'must-see' for Trek fans.
Mind blown.

Re: Sci-Fidelity
Will be watching this over the weekend time permitting, but yes it's been a fun series thus far. At least it avoids the lets sort it all out in the last episode trap - I hope!
Plus halfway through the last Picard for the 2nd time.
Not sure what they can do with Discovery now, it's way too serious for it's own good.
Also watching Good Omens 2, A very lightweight light hearted bit of fun.

Re: Sci-Fidelity
Great, wasn't it? And the cast did all their own singing I read. Mind you, The lovely Nurse Chapel owes Autotune a debt of gratitude, unless I miss my guess.Fretless wrote: ↑Fri Aug 04, 2023 7:46 am

It definitely gives "Once More, With Feeling," the Buffy musical episode, a run for its money.
p.s.
Loved the Klingons. I will say no more.

Re: Sci-Fidelity
Absolutely brilliant, but as said above, lot's and lot's of Autotune, and not just Chapel.
But who cares it was a hoot..

Re: Sci-Fidelity
AFAIK, Rebecca Romijn (Una), Christina Chong (La'an) and Celia Rose Gooding (Uhura) are all trained singers and did do their own vocals (without autotune). Pike and Spock deadpanned it and M'Benga is so obviously not a singer that it didn't matter.
The idea for a musical setting came originally from Christina Chong and this cast is such an incredibly tight ensemble that has proved that there is nothing they cannot handle from dark drama through deep emotion to slapstick humour (like the fairytale episode in season one).
We are approaching the season 2 finale this week - I hope to God that they don't leave us with a cliffhanger ....
.... but they probably will.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds - No spoilers from me, but what an absolute BASTARD of a cliffhanger to finish the season.
