Re: My latest obsession
It's a dinner dance type thing with fireworks at midnight. You have to buy a ticket and a room at the hotel. I can't see there being any Animal type drumming unfortunately or pissed up naked people swinging from the rafters (yes I have seen that at a wedding ).

Re: My latest obsession
That's a common thing for people to say. Have you even tried to play something ? Many don't cos they are intimidated by something that looks really hard. Some people seem to pick up the knack of playing an instrument really quickly where with others it takes a lot longer. But you can not get away from the fact that it takes a lot of hard work to progress to a level you (and an audience) can be happy with.
It is a lot easier if you learn as a child as it's just easier to learn at the age (brain is a sponge). I started at 16 which was a bit late but I practised for at least two hours every day without fail on a proper drum kit. Playing along to my favourite music of the time was how i got going and I really was mad for it - couldn't get enough. Nobody had to force me to practice. Looking in to the formal side of learning the drums (reading drum notation, practising rudiments etc) only came at a later stage when my technique started to limit what I could play.
It was really frustrating hearing all these things in my head that I wanted to play but couldn't work out quite the right way of doing them. In the end lessons were what opened the door to being more articulate and started another learning journey. So, lessons and learning things properly from the ground up is really important but I don't think that this should be rammed home too much to a point where it kills the fun. I had friends who were forced to have instrument lessons when they were young and the vast majority came to hate it.
My son is currently having lessons with a teacher in the next town to us. I sit in on them and play along on a little set of practice pads which are quiet and don't interfere noise wise with the lesson. I get to see how my son is progressing and get to practice as well myself. This is the second drum tutor my son has had. I try to tech him bits and bobs but you know how it goes - kids don't want to listen to stupid Daddy. Anyway we usually end up having words
His first tutor was a graduate from Leeds college of music with a degree in Jazz. He was a lovely bloke and a very good drummer and teacher but he followed the Trinity drum tuition books to the letter (very formal). A learnt a few things and even had a few of my own lessons with him to iron out a few bad habits. I didn't realise though until the we started with the second tutor what we had been missing. The fun . His approach to teaching is different. My son gets to chose songs to learn that he really likes (anything from movie soundtracks mostly) and as well as playing along he still gets to learn rudiments, reading and all the other formal stuff. It works out really well and at the moment he is learning Moonage Daydream - David Bowie. Getting along very well with it - some of the notation is hard to sight read cos some of the fills are hard but I am amazed how fast he is learning.
If you start learning any instrument then don't forget to practice to a metronome as much as you can. Especially important for a drummer

Re: My latest obsession
I envy you Stu. When I was nearly 19 I got a cheap second hand guitar and amp, but did not get far. Started too late and having small hands does not help. Some years ago my step son picked up the same guitar and got further than me. He lost interest and gave it up. My friend sort of took it up in his mid 40s, so to speak, as he does not play an instrument. He is the singer in a AC/DC cover band, is very good and has a great time. Most of the gigs raise money for charity.

Stu, if you're ever having a problem getting folks to go home, I will send you a tape of my singing. It will not only clear the room, it will probably clear the entire building - it's an absolutely dreadful din

Re: My latest obsession
What would a diy drum made with a 3mm steel hemisphere for a shell sound like ? I haven't a clue to be honest but it might be interesting to find out (before I use the hemispheres for my speakers).
So take this....
And add this and a way of tensioning the tuning rods
Maybe I will win a prize for the most stupid idea of the year ??????
