It appears to be one step forwards and 3 backwards with my system at the moment! Ive just finnished making a pair of 7metre long van damme rca cables, plugged them into my recently acquired active sub and its started making a very aggressive buzz. Constant and regardless of volume. Tried other plugs etc no connections ie rca etc to no avail. Could it be a capacitor? Thats balls to my weekend of fillms and music...

You have a broken earth either in the cable or the sub.

Ive tried to seperate power cables and with out any audio connections. Is there a straight foward way to diagnose? Thanks for getting back so quick by the way.

It is nothing to do with mains earth.

I know nothing about subs but if a signal path loses its *signal* earth you will hear a constant howl.

Check the cable the signal earth is the screen.

Sorry Im very to all this. When you say check the cable. Do you mean visually or maybe like a continuity test? I hate not knowing what to do.

I presume it is an interconnect going to the sub, if so unscrew the plugs and see if the cable is broken. If the signal is broken you get nothing but if the signal connection are ok but the screen which is both earth and negative path is broken then the sub will howl, which I presume is the sound you are hearing. Beyond that I can't help as I am not there.
