As a footnote to my ordering a DigiOne Signature - there are a couple of extra bits that the prospective owner will need:

1) An extra power supply.
2) USB C connectors (2 of them).

The 2-board arrangement calls for 2 separate power links - the 'dirty' board can be run from a 5V/3A switching wall-wart - which will also provide power to the Pi board. The 'clean' board needs a noise-free DC source such as a linear PSU or Allo can provide a rechargeable battery-pack.

Raspberry Pi's normally get power via a Micro-USB plug, but in this case the power sockets are on the Allo board and these are the reversable USB C type as found on current smartphone models. Adaptor plugs from Micro-USB (female) to USB C (male) can be found online.

Been keeping up to date with this thread. I will defo be trying this streaming malarky out when funds allow. Still not quite sure the best and simplest way to store downloads and access them but I'm sure I will get there in the end. Keep up the fantastic info guys.

Downloads: copy them to a Network hard-drive (NAS) which means you can access your music files from anywhere in the home. Or a USB storage disk can be attached directly to the Pi.

Nearly set to go:
Pi board with Volumio installed - check.
New USB C cables / adaptors - check.
Extra 5V/3A wall-wart - check.

Just waiting for Allo to ship the DigiOne and case.

All this faffing about with boxes and wires to trip over ;) I trip easily - cough...

Is this really so 'bad' (being a Richer Sounds Special) that you lot wouldn't even consider one? -

I dare say it has its place but when you can build way better for less than half the price it wouldn't even register on my thought process

*In this case,* have you directly compared them please? It seems a bloody load of faff when you can get for well under a grand (we're not talking Naim or Linn here), a streaming option you possibly can sell to your better half ;) Cambridge stuff does seem pretty well designed.

I know it's easy to knock commercial products, but sometimes, they can actually be ok I feel. I'll get out here as I know I'm not a 'Pi' kind of builder or modifier.

I haven't but I;m 99% certain it won't sound any better than an allo signature and it won't have the functionality of a Squeezebox

I run Squeezebox server on an old PC, use a PI for the client and control with either its touchscreen or a tablet.

my wife is in her words "to technology what Michael Jackson was to child minding" and even she can use it
