Garrard 401

Unread post by maxwell65 »

Hi,
I've acquired a 401 with a SME3009.
Any recommendations?
Thoughts on cartridges?
What about the plinth?
I know Zebbo made his own constrained layer. Impressive.
Here's an idea for the Doc: have you ever thought of using perspex to make one?
Cheers,
Max

If you get the chance, try other arms to see if you prefer them to the SME.

I was planning to try solid acrylic but it doesn't come cheap. My guess is that it would work very well and I've not shelved the idea completely.
Here's my effort, it does seem to work very well.

I use a twin tier slate plinth which I have infilled between the tiers with 18mm plywood layers which the separate armboard sits on. It seems to work well, no discernable noise / rumble. I use a PU7 arm and AT33ev cartridge with it.

I have a two-piece Cumbrian green slate plinth sitting in the conservatory to try at some point. Looks very nice.
The only reason I haven't tried it yet is that I need to drill the hole to take the SME.

Update:
401: I replaced the idler wheel with the audiosilente model (although the original was in excellent shape) and the mains cable with AN.
3009: AN silver wire
The results are outstanding and very close to the Doc's 301 setup. The 401 runs quiet.
The Doc was right when he said that a Garrard would blow the competition away when set up correctly.

I too use a twin tier slate plinth on my 401, and have heard a 401 in a twin tier acrylic plinth at a previous Owston. Sounded very good as I remember.
