Hi Colin,
I only use AC on heaters because it is easier implement. I don't get hum problems. DC if badly implemented can often sound far worse than AC heating.
The main problem I have, is that I have possess little understanding of solid state circuits, which is why I build with valves. Richard always used to say that SS is more difficult, therefore the bodgers tend to go for valves because they either can't be arsed or are too stupid to learn solid state. I fit both of those definitions.

Re the Zener strings. I mostly use gas regulator tubes because they glow a nice colour. Pathetic isn't it.
But I get by and make a nice sound, which is all I want really.

Don't know what a tranzobe is and if I try to search for it with different spellings, all I get is drugs or transgender stuff.

Wish I knew more than I do, but I find electrical engineering concepts, especially AC theory incredibly difficult. The wonder of it is that I’ve got as far as I have.
