Thanks, recycled parts are limited to heat-sink, power lead and feet from a DUAL and the boards. The rest is new. The case would only have been recycled if I had bought it with wine within. I didn't.

Pity, the wine might have improved your enjoyment factor?

Smashing job Hannes, I also like the idea of recycling, and it's got to be asked, was it a German wine box?

It was a cheap standard present box for three bottles . So likely to be from China ...

After having a further look into the AP70 I decided to make the amp a bit tidier:

So that's it - case closed.

The stored energy is very important, but the speed to which you can top up this energy is also important.
Low ESR (less effect at low mains frequency) low series internal inductors, speed of rectifiers, transformer impedance, and most importantly the ripple current and MTBF and operating temperatures.
So 0.5C(V x V) is very important ie A/S

Yes , but most commercial caps report similar specs dont they?

Not all, are the same, select MIL spec cap if you want good ones and funny enough SMPSU caps are often better than bog standard stuff.
Check for ESR, ESL, Ripple Current, temp working, life. And on some spec you get resonant frequency odd thing to spec you may think not for high speed SMPSU design running over 1MHz.
Tants no thanks dreadful things Oscon by Sanyo nice, Noyer are good to.

Tantalum capacitors are fine where they are good, in computers apparently, but they seem to be expensive so I don't see why anyone would use them unless it was essential. I dare say there are loads in modern avionic boxes but I haven't been inside a black box for over 40 years.

To answer DQ, it isn't just the capacitors as I am sure Colin will tell you, the other components matter too.
