Daniel, that is a big fib, you understand loads more than you let on, that a lawyer trick, seen it tried it failed, I giggled.Daniel Quinn wrote: ↑Sat Jul 10, 2021 9:39 am I think you are overestimating my level of knowledge.
I'm a lawyer , my electronics knowledge is rudimentary.
I did this once at Naim, in my normal cloths, sandals T shirt and odd socks.
Naim wanted a Class D amp for the Rolls Royce Car, so they gave the design to a company in Scandinavia, it had a SMPSU to convert 12VDC to a twin 0-30VDC rail at 300W.
Well they kept smoking and dead soon was all there sample 5 of them went to silicon heaven.( killing FET,s is a capital crime, killing digital lies is a mercy killing)
So my company Catch XXII (me) was again asked to solve and fix the problem.
I did the core size they used was far to small and they had driven the B/H curve to high. A meeting was called and I was invited (big mistake never have me in a meeting) this 4 "engineers" from Scancockup look around the table a knew everybody except me. Then one jumpup teenager said to me " and what do you do" "I make the tea I said" at which point god bless him Mr, Stevens said " this Colin Wonfor he designs SMPSU,s" The thunderstorm rolled in and Scancockup team almost hid under the table. Odd that as they lost the contract and I ended up making 50 odd transformer by hand to be bashed tested. Non failed, I went on to fix the app note design from IR they had copied which was not quite right, but fixed now.
So Daniel you fib too or do you make the tea??? can I have a cup please mine is crap.

Re: Simple Gadgets you can build DIY only
It is true, when I worked for Hughes before I was seconded to that Space place, I turn up in meeting in odd slippers and on the wrong feet. The TD of Boing and a Senior Engineer from the space place plus our MD was there and few more. My excuse would have been I started work at 4.00AM that day and not 9.00AM as the other did I was growing silicon crystals in a cyanide atmosphere the day before and wanted to see the results. But nobody said a word, Dr David (Yurth) a old friend had warned them I was nuts. He still a good friend.
Here is a link to one of many patent he and I worked on :- lots of sparks mmmm nice
