Testing A 80

Unread post by floydfan »

Hi All

I've been doing a bit of decorating and carefully took my system apart and put it back together again. When I fired it up there was an awful screech so I quickly turned off and rechecked my connections. It seemed that a positive speaker lead to one of the A80 units was a bit loose so I pushed back in and all was fine. Today I had some hum when playing vinyl so investigated and checked all leads were secure and the hum reduced but on turning on later I got the screech from the same A80. I turned off but the leads seemed secure. So am seeking advice before messing about.
Is there any way to check if there is a fault in the unit without damaging anything?
The screech is very loud and not good for the nerves so any advice will be welcome

Look at the interconnects - I had this with my A40's when the cats had buggered my SSP mk1 leads.

Hope the Doc is along soon

yes check for a loose ground wire on your interconnects .

swap interconnects and use the other a80 . if the are okay the fault lies with the amp .

It is an intermittent earth connection either in the interconnect cable or in the amp.

Thanks. I will check the interconnects and hope its not the amp. I'm not sure what type of interconnect but they are NVA.

if you have got any cheap generic moulded ones , use them as substitute as it helps to narrow it down and saves you unplugging and replugging the NVA ones

Don't have any other interconnects but I removed the suspect one and fiddled about with my multimeter and when I wiggle the wire I get a break in continuity. Not 100% sure as I would need three hands to hold the probes tightly and wiggle the wire.
Is there a way to take apart the plug to get a proper look?

Depends on which model and how much heatshrink on it, can you give us a pic. The best bet is order a set of soundcord if you need a cable or pop to your local Maplin and get as cheap as poss. If everything then works send back the nva cable for repair.

Found an old interconnect. Works so will send back the faulty one. Glad it wasn't too serious.

Enclose a note with full details, again I am still receiving returns with no note. I really do not understand what people expect from me.
