As the Doc says above, his amps NEED the passive pre to form a synergetic whole.

The DAC I was running was a Hegel HD25 which at first was directly hooked up to NVA A40 monoblocks, the sound was edgy and lacked coherence. Also plugging headphones into the unit caused a severe buzzing through the speakers.
Inserting a P50sa into the set solved all issues and control and refinement were returned.

A year or two back I had exactly the same experience as Fretless above when I tried using a Beresford Caiman DAC as a pre-amp too. Plugging my headphones into the Beresford caused an almighty noise. That experiment didn't last long.

These days 99% of my listening is done via my Squeezebox Touch, and like Fretless I have my P20 set about half way and I never touch the control. All volume control is then handled through the Squeezebox remotely.

Ok - can I ask if the P50sa will work ok with most power amps - and a sprinkling of vintage like the Quad 405 ?

It will work well with Quad amps. The only amps I personally don't recommend for a passive is Naim.

I will probs be getting one then before March comes to an end!

I figured that going for the most expensive whilst discounted was the sensible option - I also wanted the A20 too but I’m pushing the pennies a tad too far this Month!

I hope I’ve made the right decision based on my logic. The P50sa would make a good foundation for other items I may bring to the table later on. For now I want to get the best out of a 405 mk 1. Shame about the A20 ....

If using an NVA passive pre - is there a limitation on the length of the interconnect to the power amps (when using your cables of course)?

Like others here, I use a digital front end (Raspberry Pi or Chromecast) but always through a NVA preamp. I can attenuate either at the pre-amp or in the software driving the DAC (although I have disabled this on the Raspberry PI/Volumio mix)
