Has anyone ever ported a pair of Cubes or Cubix?

Unread post by NSNO2021 »

All this being confined to quarters gets me/you thinking and as I am bit by bit upgrading my circa 1991 Cubix I wondered if anyone can recall if Richard every tried porting the speakers?

That would be like putting ketchup on a steak.

I'm not aware of him doing so, and I'd be more than a little surprised.

Ha love the ketchup reference 😁 To my way of thinking nothing is sacrosanct, I have always been curious and if you don't challenge convention then there's a danger everything becomes a tad beige 🤔 Now having said all of that I am not going to put a big hole in the rear of my Cubix's to satisfy my curiosity without undertaking some research hence my post.

In my listening experience, ports compromise rhythm section timing and bass notes lack differentiation and integration with the rest of the music. I liked a 'spirited' set of ported Neat standmounts that ToonTrev bought to one of my bake-offs, and I like the 3 Square Audio miniature standmounts that I heard with NVA amps, earlier in the year, but they are both playing tricks with the bass (albeit the 3SQ implementation is far superior and rarely bothered me).

In a relatively small sealed enclosure, I think you must accept more limited low frequency extension (although what you do get is better defined and timed) and / or lower efficiency.

I imagine there are very good technical reasons why you wouldn't want a port in Cubes, but I can only tell you what my ears tell me.

RD had an instinct for the mechanical energy of drivers and cabinets. I cannot imagine him ever considering altering the dynamic of the Cube speaker by putting a port in it.

Ok and thanks for the replies. Given I don't like ketchup this question might well be filed away under the heading - thanks but no thanks 😉

Does this count
I made cubettes clone initially before scaling up which left me with empty cabinets- I filled the front with a small full range and modified the top for a 1” up firing port- pleasant enough but the full range were poor quality- the port added / expanded the bass response- it’s doable and interesting 🧐
