Re: Speaker Stands

I had my opinion on this subject altered this week. And after making the changes that I did, (Isoacoustic Pucks and then wooden stands,) and then going back, I felt compelled to change my stands from sand filled, heavy and solid, to light, open and wooden.
In my room they sounded better.

From the information in the thread starter your Atacama stands are different to mine. Mine have one thick substantial column and are back breaking heavy filled up with sand. In terms of mass they have similarities to the marble ones.

You're right: I did start out with a set of four-pillar Atacamas that I bought with the speakers,

but then later I bought a set with a single pillar, which are sand filled.

I wouldn't describe either set as "back-breaking" to lift (although they are both pretty heavy) so I suspect they're a lot less massive than yours?
I have used both Blu-tac and then oak cones between the speakers and the stand, and the oak cones were better. Neither was as good as the Isoacoustic Pucks though to my ears. I always spike the stands to my (concrete) floor.

(The pictures here are not of my actual stands - just lifted randomly off the 'net for examples.)

The ones in the second picture look similar to mine but seem to be shorter. This could explain the weight of mine. I use blutac. As the floor is wooden I use small mats to protect it from the spikes.

Last stands i had were partington dreadnought stands with quad 11l's
They were interesting as the baseplate and top plate were pressed steel pans filled with bitumen, there was a central square tower that was bitumen lined and 4 outer tubes.
Those were very good stands, i had atacama ones before that that were nowhere near as good

The dreadnoughts did look like the fell off an oil rig though..

Following recent posts I thought I would give the Iso Pucks I have in place in the second system a try in the main system. They will not be going back! I was not expecting such an improvement, or any improvement. There is now an extra level of clarity, improved imaging and deeper bass. I think the next step will have to be oak stands, SQ considerations aside, a bigger top plate would not go amiss with the pucks. It was timely that Paul posted the link to HiFi Pig with the interview with the designer shortly after I transferred the pucks. I now have a far better understanding of what is going on and the pit falls of rigidity and mass.

The only down side concerns the second system which will not be the same with the washing machine feet back in place on the resonant cupboard. Might have to invest in more Iso Pucks.

It's a pity you're not a bit closer, as I would have loved to compare notes on this. It looks like your experience putting the Pucks in was similar to mine.
For me, the next step (wooden stands) gave more bass resolution and clarity, so going back made the bottom sound a bit "one note" and wooly in comparison.
I think I might be in the HiFi trade.

Our experiences with the Pucks are similar and I am sure oak stands will further enhance the listening experience.

It is only now with the second system playing that I am fully appreciating how much the Pucks clean up the sound. What I previously considered to be a very decent sound with the washing machine feet back in place is anything but now. There is harshness, lack of detail and muddied bass. I will get used to it in time but I am not doing the system components justice so another set of Pucks will be required.
