Thanks, I will investigate.
Gave it a try and it won't connect with my Sonore streamers. Similar recognition issues with WAV.

Things used to be so much simpler before streaming.

Fretless wrote: Tue Mar 21, 2023 12:25 pm Just received an interesting link from network-boffin Lazmo warning of possible problems / dangers on older models of Western Digital NAS devices and thought it wise to pass it on to any others here who may be interested:

https://krebsonsecurity.com/2021/07/ano ... tal-users/

WD have had to change their firmware in order to fix some serious bugs in the OS, at the expense of certain functionality (which would explain why some streaming devices won't work with the new model MyCloud).

My new NAS has the fix so should be okay (fingers crossed).

Thanks Lazmo!

I was able to update my device to My cloud 0S.5.

Have not had a CD player for years, except in the car. I do not use that as I plug in a flash drive containing my rips.

Guys, out of interest, why haven't you given your storage setup the same importance as the rest of your systems?

Surely investing in a "proper" NAS setup, using something like the Synology boxes I use would make sense. You can pick them up at reasonable prices on eBay, and add your own HQ hard drives. I think there's a decent increase in quality from home/consumer-oriented boxes, to business-class storage, including easy setup of RAID 1, "mirrored" storage, which is the system I use, and which is the simplest way to protect your music files against disk failure. The Synology OS (which is the only one I know) has a complete set of tools - and downloadable add-ons - to make whatever you want to do, easier.

You've already upgraded the rest of your networks, cabling, router, etc., and yet you're neglecting what to me is possibly the most important part of it, the integrity of your file storage.

I'd be interested in Lindsay's views on this.

Makes perfect sense to me, I have an old HP EX495 doing raid type back up duty and two other PC's with full copies of all music/video stuff. Plus we have two WD drives that switch between here and the father in laws house. so hopefully reasonably secure.

Nothing of any great importance but a chopping and changing day in my secondary rigs.

The forced removal of the Tinkerboard from the lounge headphone setup meant that I could shift the Pi2 / Allo DigiOne 'Dalek-case' unit in there. Unfortunately whilst hooking that up I I broke the micro-USB connector on the lead from the Tomanek LPSU - rendering that useless as well! Bother. As the Digione has a coax connection to the DAC (Cambridge DacMagic Plus) the intervening Oehlbach Masterclock came out as well (onto the reserve bench along with a pair of DH Labs Silver Sonic cables). Might try swapping the Oehlbach for the Schiit Wyrd in the Upstairs system and see what that does.

The DigiOne is now powered by Allo's own 'quiet' wall-wart, which ain't too bad. Just had a long session with that rig and it is sounding quite nice, the DigiOne is a bit softer-sounding than the Tinkerboard but no less enjoyable.

Into the audio-workstation system, to replace the DigiOne, is a spare Pi2 / HifiBerry Digi+ PRO powered by a standard 5V/3A wall-wart. SQ through the Metrum Musette is fine - haven't had a serious blast yet but it isn't a system for audiophile snobbery anyway. Clarity is important and it has that.

Was looking at an Odroid C4 (can also run Volumio) to replace the Asus Tinkerboard, but then wondered if that might run into the same snag with the WD NAS. Don't think I'll bother with that. If anything it will be one of the little fanless Windows PC's that Amazon stocks for under €300. Not yet though - things are all up and running again and I'm sure that the old Upgrade Bug will be biting soon enough.

Ruminations over.
Goodnight all!

:guiness;

I can't understand why some folks are not using dedicated streamers.

The life of an audiophile-hifi-geek is a constant and frustrating uphill struggle, vainly seeking that glorious moment of sonic Nirvana when it all comes together and your 'precious' sounds just perfect!

Image

Well, I have just had one of those revelatory experiences when you think "Damn - I've never heard THAT before!".

So, last night, I had a USB regen unit and cables lying spare and out of idle curiosity plugged them into the Upstairs set. Thus the signal chain became: WD EX2 NAS > CAT8 > Bonn N8 switch > Audioquest Cinnamon CAT7 > Volumio PC > DH Labs Mirage USB > Oehlbach XXL Masterclock > AudioQuest Carbon USB-C > Sabaj A10d 2022 DAC > Mogami XLR > Sabaj A10a 2022 monoblocks > NVA LS6 > NVA Cube2.

Now I have been tweaking this installation quite a lot recently and was extremely pleased with myself to have it running so well. Then the Oehlbach replaces the Schiit Wyrd and a whole lot of weird shit starts happening; suddenly my little hifi-space became huge! With eyes closed it was like the back and side walls had fallen away with the ceiling lifted to ballroom-height. Instruments coming in from distant corners, voices that felt like they were standing right in front of me. Maybe I'm exaggerating (probably not for the first time) but this is a new level of performance for any system that I have ever put together. It is the sense of space and depth that impresses me the most.

Anyway, just had to get that off my chest.
Work-day today, back to the Salt Mines.
