Tekton Speakers

Unread post by antonio66 »

Don't know whether many of you have heard of this speaker brand, but with plenty of time on my hands, and also looking for a pair of bookshelf speakers, I've spent a lot of time on You Tube. :ugeek: Well they sound fantastic through my headphones and would appear to be great value for money. Just quickly looking at their website, it would appear you order direct from Tekton.

I haven't heard any but they have cropped up in my speaker design research. Their circular tweeter array is said to be very clever. I think the central one is the only one that is allowed to reproduce the very highest frequencies. The outer ones are rolled off with a low pass filter to prevent lobing or comb filtering.

Most models are what is called a MTM design otherwise known as D'appolito. They seem to divide opinion due to this. As always you must listen for yourself.

They seem to have generated a lot of positive reviews.
Would really like to hear a pair.
Also, to my eye, simply in terms of acreage and £/driver they look to be good value relative to other options. (Obviously those things don't matter if they sound terrible.)
System 1: JRiver MC24 > Dell Latitude 7270 > Asus Xonar Essence One Muses Edition DAC & pre- > One4 Class A power amp (with Dynamic PSU boards) > DIY Monacor SP-310CX speakers & DIY Dayton Audio SD315A-88 bass cab.
LC Audio Technology mains DC filter > Sovereign MTBPS balanced power supply
TQ (Wonfor) Ultra Black cables.

System 2: Anything with a headphone socket > Inca Tech Claymore > DIY Monacor SP-308CX speakers

For their Ulfbehrt model they claim:

"99dB 2.83V@1m sensitivity
4 Ohm design for optimum performance"

4 ohm for optimum performance? On what planet? What happened to 8(+) ohms for optimum performance with an amplifier?
And 99 dbs from a non-horned design? I'm calling bullshit on that.
When Stereophile measured the Tekton Monitor they found:
" My estimate of the Impact's sensitivity was 87.5dB(B)/2.83V/m, considerably lower than the specified 94dB"

There's exageration and then there's big fat lies. A 6.5 db difference is a big fat lie.

Plus - they are ported designs. So these appear to be another (semi) slimline ported low efficiency speaker. With an array approach to their drivers.
Arrays can be good for in-room dispersion. They are not so good for comb effects for nearfield listening.

You beat me to it, Lindsay. I was just typing much the same.

These days I tend to look at speakers with my NVA hat on, and I don't think that's a bad thing. Any speaker rated at 4 ohms will likely drop below that figure in a couple of places, likely with a complex crossover that has been implemented to give 'acceptable measurements' and which will kill the music.
