Gents, let's not forget that the tda1541 was for quite a while the only 16 bit dac chip in town available to every brand. Also let's not forget that it was surpassed, I don't recall any of the magazines making claims that the newer 16, 18 and 24 bit chips from Sony, wolfson, pm, bb et al that followed it weren't better sounding devices.

Ubiquity isn't the same as superiority, it's easy to fall into rose tinted hindsight.

There's an article on the "Adventures In High fidelity Audio" site, entitled "Is the TDA 1541 DAC Still Relevant Today."

Of course, it is dated June 28th 2010...

For anyone who wants to blow their mind with the sheer number of, well, numbers in this post here's a list of CD players and what DAC D/A converter and the CD Mech that they used.

There is quite a bit of interest in Philips CD players based on 1541A DAC. You will be surprised how good these sound. In hi-fi and absolute terms not as good as say an ESS sabre DAC. I can do the comparison and a modest Marantz CD65SE II is very musical in comparison to a CXC through Sabre DAC (in Oppo 205) while having a less neutral and expansive presentation. They likely are better than many cheaper modern DACs for stereo reproduction. However bear in mind there is more to the sound of a DAC or ADC than the chip. I doubt anyone can make a 1541 (ladder) chip today. They are making expensive resistor based DACs to replicate the sound and build on it such as Denafrips.
