Further diversion.

I am a big fan of Grado headphones and have spent many a happy hour relaxing in the garden with them on. Will have to investigate them on Facebook.

The Budget Audiophile strikes again!

Tweak of the day - rubber anti-vibration washing-machine feet for 10 euro.

I have long scoffed at the vinyl-addicts with their weird mods and add-ons, only to find that I have now joined their ranks. That's life, I suppose.

With this system standing upstairs in a 300-year-old farmhouse, the floors are prone to vibration and I could feel that the hifi unit was picking up some from the adjacent speakers.

The Pro-Ject 1.2 has surprised me several times by its sonic strengths and this mod lifts it another notch. The bass is tighter, better-defined and deeper. Stereo imaging is sharper and airier.

At a guess, this deck would now give a Rega P3 stiff competition.

Cheap n' cheerful audio tips #423: massive isolation platform.

Nosing around at the bottom of the garden this morning, I spotted some broken marble-style terrace-tiles. Finding a section that was roughly rectangular and weighed about 15kg, I cleaned the mud off it and hauled it up to the music-room.

Putting it onto the rubber washing-machine feet I got recently, then I placed the Pro-Ject 1.2 with Grado Signature Jr cartridge on top and fired it up.

Interesting. The bass feels to have gained an extra octave in extension and the detail is both sharper and smoother. More '3D' effect as well.

The budget audiophile is like heavy, dude !

I used a Bamboo chopping board with sorbothane hemisphere's to great effect, but I place 4 wooden cones (one at each corner of my PTtoo) between tt an board rather than more rubber type feet

There's really good technical basis for how that works. The intertia of the slab is high so it tends to stay still. The rubber feet absorb the vibrations as they need to go somewhere I used something similar to isolate a weighing system from a suspended floor many years ago. Some of the more erudite hifi mags used to go on about stored energy - I think that's a load of :Bllocks:

I've heard about the bamboo chopping boards but I've no idea why they work.
