It's all been said before

Unread post by karatestu »

The usual topics on hifi forums are the same old same old bollox that has been discussed a million times already. God I'm bored. Cable threads, recommend me a speaker, my transformers hum, my hifi sounds so good and it cost me more than you earn in a year. Getting really tired of it now. The only thing worth posting about is music. The rest is varying degrees of bollox.

Stu, essentially you are correct.
I won't recommend a speaker because: Mine are so old they could have grand children, I don't have your ears, you would want to spend more/less* than I suggest. *Delete as appropriate.
Cables: yes you need cables, no I won't recommend any because: I make my own, I don't have your ears, you would want to spend more/less* than I suggest. *Delete as appropriate.
Transformers hum, get over it.

All of which may explain why I prefer being in at the production stage. Hi-Fi is boring, music is fun.

Doesn't stop me from thinking about Quad ESLs or power amps though.

The tag teams are so obvious, shilling silly priced :Bllocks: and receiving kid glove treatment from mods. With the shrinking market it seems forums are more for the benefit of sellers than buyers.

Most of it goes straight over my head. I know bugger-all about hifi, but I do know about music.

Please tell us all everything you know about music Paul. Do you like both types? Country AND western ?

The transformers I am using now don't hum  well, apart from the big bugger in my BMU. I too much prefer making music but the recording of music is a skill I do not possess, sadly  My experience of doing it myself runs to hanging a couple of PZM's on the wall  I hang around with people who do know what they're doing though.

Geoff, you seem to have some sort of Quad fettish. Can we help you with that ?

Blame Savvypaul for the renewed interest in ESLs, in practice I don’t have room for them. The Power amps; you get a lot of amp for not much money and all the technical data is readily available. The manufacturer will even talk to you! I only know one other manufacturer that does that. My interest in another amp is a DIY one I don’t actually need any more.

Re music.

I have been known to buy "job lots" of CDs on Ebay.

It's great fun adding loads of new music to my collection for very little dosh.

Some are duplicates of what I already have, they, and those that I genuinely don't like, go in a box for redistribution.

Occasionally I find real gems that I would have categorised as "not my thing" but end up really liking.

I'm becoming less fussy about the system as the years roll by, as long as it's of reasonable quality and conveys the emotion and soul of the music.

The Music !!!!!!
 :banana-guitar: :character-beavisbutthead: :banana-rock: :banana-dreads: :happy-cheerleaderkid: :happy-cheerleadersmileyguy:

The technical stuff is a fun hobby but it's the tunes that matter - that's why I/we go to absurd lengths to make sure everything sounds just so. Because it has to.

My current trip down memory lane with the big, black, round things has made me fall in love again. The music WAS the music back then in the dawn of time. I'm grabbing as much vinyl as I can at the moment, and all from the mid 70's to mid 80's period with names like Heart, Saga, Jean-Michel Jarre, Mike Oldfield, Alan Parsons, Genesis, OMD, Camel, Rush. Albums that I once had on LP and for which I have a huge longing to hear them in that form again. Don't care about crackles or pops - it's that warm, enveloping familiarity of way back when. If I want sonic perfection I have the CD - and some are on a second (or third) remaster.

Now I need to find a reasonable copy of 'Rumours'.
