Meanwhile, back in a land where intelligent people don't feel the need to resort to unnecessarily blunt euphemisms.

I have in daily use here a Sony subwoofer that sits in the corner behind the TV. A friend was clearing out her barn and gave me this. When I'd cleaned off the straw and bird-droppings I found, to my surprise, that it was still working properly.
So now it does series and film duty, great for those deep-space effects and disaster- movie rumbles.

I was given my cole lcr phono stage. It was not working, and required a fair investment of time and money to get it up and running again but it was worth it.
It needed a new custom mains transformer which i had made by toroidy, luckily this was done before the customs rules changed, a complete rejig of the earthing scheme so that it was properly safe, and several components replaced.

The moving coil step ups it had in it were fried (s&b tx103s) and these were deemed to be beyond saving. Replacements from s&b were far too expensive so it now has 2 mm inputs instead of an mm and an mc, and luckily the lcr transformers which do the correction were ok even though they had been fried aswell. Other failed components had protected them by blowing up before they did.

Now it's fixed its lovely, when i got it it was a doorstop. If the lcr transformers had been fried it would still be a doorstop

I have given a fair bit of hifi equipment away - mostly to music-loving friends who can appreciate it. Amongst these items were:

Musical Fidelity V-DAC + V-Link II + V-PSU. - a fine little device and my first 'proper' standalone DAC. The modular design meant that it could be built upon and upgraded.

Musical Fidelity M1DAC - really, truly a lovely-sounding unit with a rich, warm sound. I gave this one to a fan of Classical music (which it is perfect for)

Meze 99 Classic headphones. - I just had too many headphones and have basically returned to only using AQ NightHawk/Owl.

Grado SR225e - for my money, the best-sounding Grado's. These went to the same friend as the Meze's when his teenage son adopted those and wouldn't let them go. A new-generation audiophile! Mission complete.

Words, on their own, are just words. Context is everything.

DQ's use of the 'C' word was obviously self-deprecating. It was not insulting to anyone. It did not break the rules of the forum. It made me chuckle (not that that is important).

If you want a forum that is free from some words that you don't like, start your own forum. This forum is not aimed at children or the sanctimonious.

As for not using the 'C' word being an indicator of intelligence, then that is complete nonsense. Highly intelligent people often swear profusely - there have been several studies.

I dislike grammar fascism of all kinds. If I can understand what someone means, that's good enough for me.

Grammar fascists are almost as bad as people who judge hifi by measurements.

I think that grammar pedantry is a very lazy form of posting...and it also, potentially, shows an inability to see what is most important.

I appreciate good grammar because it makes the reader's job easier, but the quality of the content is far more important.

I'm reminded of the joke where the football manager addresses one of his players after a game...
