Air tube earphones

Unread post by tweet_my_ribbon »

Has anyone tried air tube headphones/ear buds ? I don't need decent sound quality but something without magnets or wires carrying an electric charge.
Have looked at many but they all seem crap or miss-labelled or have magnets to hold them together when not being used. I want just the sound without a magnetic field (however small) and no electric field (EMF).
Any of you know of or have used such a thing ?
Merry christmas.

Back in the 70's and 80's I can remember those 'stethoscope headsets' in use on 747's for long-distance flights - long rubber tubes that plugged into a socket in the arm-rest, where the speaker was mounted. Although I can't really recall what the SQ was like.

I am also sensitive to EMF and cannot tolerate Bluetooth which sets my ears ringing and gives me a headache.

In-ear buds also cause irritation but over-ear headphones don't give me any major problems.

Checking current stethoscope models, like this one from Philips, they all appear to have a central speaker in the hub - this will definitely generate a magnetic field.

Well lookee here - I've found one.

These are now being implemented for patients in MRI scanners where metal/magnetic materials cannot be used. The 'Pneumatic' tubes are plugged into a special amplifier.

Hmm. not cheap.

The 'Patient Acoustic Interface' (PAI) which converts the electric music signal for the pneumatic tubes costs about 2000 dollars.

And to think we must have scrapped thousands of seat arm boxes that did exactly the same job. I doubt they cost $2,000 either. I wonder if the VC10 at Duxford has any, selling them off could pay for the upkeep of the aircraft for a few years.

I haven’t seen those for 25 years, they used to be ubiquitous for IFE but by the mid 1990s they were all but obsolete as 3.5mm sockets were standard on the new, then, generation of IFE systems. I think Aerolineas Argentinas were still using them in 1995 but I can’t remember if anyone else still had them. It might be worth contacting an electronics surplus store, if they still exist, to see if the have any but they have been out of favour for a long time.

Thanks chaps. The stethoscope earphones would be good as I have material to wrap/block around the centre speaker EMF but I need the soft tube style. I think ebay have a pair without magnets in the ear piece. They start at 4 or 5 pounds so I'll take a punt on a couple and go from there.

Right, as usual when my curiosity gets tickled - I have to take action...

So, the DefenderShield earphones were ordered (not from Amazon) and are now in.
Am giving them an occasional listen to burn them in a bit.
More soon. :music-listen:
