Goodmans Mezzo SL

Unread post by Latteman »

I’ve been happy with my omni diy speakers for a while now until……

It all started a month ago when it was my turn to visit my hifi friend- he loves the diy side and had a new pre amp/dac and some speakers to show off
We had a great night and I was impressed with a Dayton Audio 2 way speaker he had made based on wharfedale delta 60’s so we made a plan to try them at mine against my diy efforts.
To my surprise we both preferred his - they had bass, voice and image/soundstage.
He left them for a few days and in the meantime I tried to ‘cure’ mine- a few resistor & cap tweeks and positions helped but no joy.
I looked around a few local shops and cam up with a solid pair of Mezzo SL hat I swapped for an ADC DD turntable
The result is amazing- browsing the archives I find Goodmans a solid choice for Nva
I’m well happy- my omni speakers are in the loft already

Have you ever tried listening to your turntable with it well away from the speakers in that room? Or are you restricted, due to practical considerations to having to place the turntable there?

I can move the turntable- what are your thoughts/concerns?
It’s there as I used to have two and it’s away from most of the cables for the rest of the system

The turntable is on a floor mounted stand right next to a floor mounted speaker.

I can see why you have the inner tube under the speaker, as that will provide some decoupling.

In my experience, getting the turntable as isolated as possible from the speakers makes about as big an improvement to the sound as going up 1 or 2 levels in the engineering quality of the turntable. My ideal for sound is having the turntable in a different room to the speakers. Although that's not ideal for convenience.

Something else worth trying, if you haven't already, is a Sound Organisation turntable table. The original one shelf version. Or an equivalent. A light and rigid table.

Wasn't that the origin of supports? The IKEA Lack coffee table at £10.00. In hifi terms and absolute bargain.

I've not tried the Ikea Lack.

I've tried the original Sound Org against a variety of supports, most of them looking like reasonable alternatives. The Sound Org has won every bake-off I've thrown at it with the LP12 and Garrard 301. With the EMT 930 I prefered plonked on the floor.

It's one of those where I'd be happy to come to a bake-off with my sound org table. Or where I'd gently suggest trying one yourself if you can get one for reasonable money. Or trying something else with a welded metal construction, spikes and a light weight.

The Origin Live table was also pretty good - light, rigid, triangular design with 3 spiked feet. Not many around now, though.

Quadraspire are good and can be picked up reasonable secondhand.

Mini refurb; new baffle, lined with ceramic tiles, sound deadening stuff, sanded n oiled, new caps on crossover and finally supported on bespoke ‘spiked air stands’

I picked up a Sound Org table off ebay last night for £30...along with a pair of Wharfedale Dovedale IIIs that we are going to Doc-Mod.

I fancy a pair of wharfedale chevins to ‘play” with- perhaps with an external super tweeter
