Modern Minstrel

Unread post by jimbob »

Picked up the Minstrels the other night and I'd forgotten how wonderful these little things are. It's got me thinking that I'd like to have a go at making a pair using the 5.25 inch drivers the doc used and nice ply cabinets. They will be the same dimensions as the original Minstrels. Does anyone know what thickness chipboard was used on the originals?

The drivers on the Royd are, in my experience, better quality than the doc mod equivalents.
Great little drivers that I used in several diy builds

Why not just use 25mm thick chipboard? It's cheap enough and should be pleasantly thick enough for the job. I can't see it being a downgrade on the original. Sidegrades and upgrades are fine.

Or use 18mm or 25 mm void free plywood, if you fancy trying that. Again as a sidegrade or upgrade.

Think I'll be going for 18mm ply. I prefer working with ply to chipboard. As far as drivers go, the qtx ones the doc used are readily available so I'll try them first before looking at other options. I've got plenty of bison glue and plastikote so hopefully I can get the doping dialled in

I considered this idea and my plan was to make the Royd “copy” cabinets slightly larger to accommodate internal Doc mods with steel or the easier option of ceramic tiles. I was also considering a passive mid bass and going to a sealed cabinet
Good luck with the building- we expect pics

Yeah I will have to go ever so slightly larger with the cabinets to compensate for the steel plate and increased cabinet thickness. I think I will be sticking with ported cabinets which I suppose gives me the headache of trying to learn the science behind size and depth of the port 🤦

Does anybody know what would be the closest available equivalent to the original Minstrel bass drivers? I still intend trying the qtx ones the doc used but I'm curious to know if there is something a bit truer to the original that will be good for doping treatment

I looked for ages and never found any- an abused cabinet with a set of functional drivers are your best bet
I did consider some from Markaudio
