Open Baffle

Unread post by Latteman »

I’ve been experimenting with the open baffle concept and initial attempts are promising.
I was wondering if any one here has used, still does or has any experience in open baffle design - especially with Nva amplification
I’m planning a build once autumn/ winter sets in- it’s just acquiring the drivers - new or ‘vintage’ is the current decision I have to make
Cheers

There's Steve's red and black pair of semi ported, semi open baffle 4 way high efficiency first order crossover speakers that sound World Class. With that including World Class on the end of an NVA A20.

Making yourself a clone of them would be a fantastic solution.
Or you could make your own variation of that theme.

Made a simple ‘3-way’
Doc mod 12” (thanks Ant) with a trio tweeter firing forward and a small wharfedale tweeter to the rear for ‘fill’
I have included ohm reading in the photos- would You consider this to be safe to connect an Nva power amp
Cheers

Nick Gorham of Longdog demoed a pair he had made at the recent North West audio show. They appear to have received almost universal praise, they were quirky looking things, apparently they are 98dB sensitive and use a Lowther Silver PM6A along with a Supravox 12″ and super-bullet tweeter.

I remember hearing those, and they did sound pretty good.
I think I might be in the HiFi trade.
I am not currently seeking treatment for this.

I like Nick, he is something of an understated audio good guy. He certainly knows his "onions" and is always willing to help. Quite how serious he was when he said they would cost £9k to buy is anyone's guess ?

6 ohms is fine as long as you don't have a super reactive filter in the way. My B&W mid bass drivers measure 4 ohms even though they have a factory applied sticker which says 8 ohms. Go fucking figure. Nothing bad has happened. I wouldn't feel happy going lower than 4 ohms though.

This hobby is so full of bullshit that sometimes you just have to try something and be pleasantly surprised.

Cheers Stu
I’ve modified the crossover as I was nervous and have a better load
Instead of using the Nva amps I’ve mocked up an amp & pre-
quite enjoying the results with these
