Am I off my head or what ?

No, it's bloody time you got yourself something better than just the JBL speaker. Your plan sounds nice and simple, which ever streamer device you choose. Do you have your music ripped and stored on a HD?

Us DIY simpletons can't resist faffing, but that way lies madness if you get obsessed.

A musician mate on AT and me even faffed about, writing a half finished song about faffing in 2017.
It went to the tune of “When I'm Cleaning Windows" by the great George Formby:

"Now, I like valve amp building,
Speakers and all that stuff.
Some of them they turn out nice,
But most turn out dog rough!"

There's plate chokes, grid chokes, 2A3s,
Forty-fives, three 'undred Bs
Tetrodes, pentodes, DHPs
When I'm building valve amps!

Now valve amps are addictive
And it's very 'ard to stop.
I'll crank that blinkin' DC
Until all the caps go pop!

Anodes, cathodes, grids and grounds,
Silver coils, a thousand pounds,
Sparks and bangs and screeching sounds,
When I’m building valve amps.

Now seven 'undred fifty quid
Buys me a PX4.
But please don't tell the missus
Or she'll knock me through the floor!

Now for the wife, life's gettin' hard,
Front room looks like Steptoe's yard.
She's confiscated my bank card,
To stop me building valve amps.

Middle eight inst.......

A neighbour knocked upon my door
“Turn it down cant take no more,”
The watts it puts out, only four
When I'm building valve amps

Turned out nice again a’nt it !
Brilliant

No music ripped or stored on anything Dave. Can't be arsed with that. I'd be obsessing about the rip and anything else that could possibly be obsessed about

SQ from Volumio streamers is superb

Reasonably future-proof as the software is regularly updated to provide access to Qobuz, Tidal, Spotify etc. And there is built-in web radio with a vast selection of stations.
I am leaning towards the Volumio but the thing that puts me off is the fact I have to buy it from the EU and i dont know if I will get stung for duty when it gets here.

Been pondering the DIY thing and I reckon that if you invest a large amount of time and energy in a project then your expectations are very high.

When the result doesnt live up to those expectations then hopes are shattered and disappointments are huge.

The way I'd put it is that we are not little bah bah sheep that avidly follow the latest trends and fashions.
That we are more discerning.
That we appreciate good engineering in our tools. That we have a kaizen (continuous improvement) approach to life in general. With this often being reflected in our audio equipment investments.

Dinosaur is a too negative label to put on what we are, as a general group.
Goats maybe. Off up the mountain, admiring the view, chewing the grass and doing our own thing. But not sheep. And not dinosaurs.

There may be sheep type people that would call us dinosaurs. But that's because they're sheep following the social influencers and corporate marketing men and women.

Looking at AVForums there are plenty of people that have spent significant amounts of money on hi-fi and been disappointed.

Buying hi-fi from a dealer, you have to go work in your day job to earn the money to buy it. All that effort for nothing (much)!

Having attended the last few Owstons, it's very rare that I've seen DIY creations that I'd consider disappointing in terms of the material costs and time spent vs the sonic results. The majority of DIY creations that I've come across have been very much worth the time and money when compared to commercial gear.
That's why I find Owston such an inspirational event.

OK, DIY creators can be perfectionist and get disappointed. But that's not a general philosophy that I can agree with. Better to be pragmatic, or coldly logical and compare your DIY gear against what Joe Bloggs has bought from Richer Sounds or Sevenoaks.
And then give yourself a big pat on the back and a smug grin.

Yeah, lots of hopes shattered, disappointments and dreams wrecked

If I could build an amp that doesn't hum it would be a start. :shhh:

If you want a neat, unobtrusive home entertainment system hub then a Mac Mini is hard to beat. You can run these headless using apps like Screens or you can just use a monitor/TV. Connect a USB dac of your choice (anything from as simple as an Audioquest Dragonfly will be great) and you can then use virtually any software to remotely access streaming services. I really like Audirvāna.

Not only that, but it’s great for accessing YouTube, movies and if you like making music as I do, it’s great to record stuff as well.
