Leather platter mats

Unread post by Vinyl-ant »

Made myself a leather platter mat from some 2mm dark green leather. Bought a 7mm punch for the centre hole and made a 293mm disc out of a birch ply offcut to use as a cutting template.

I an pretty surprised at the difference it has made, im not one for hyperbole, but compared to the heavy 6mm rubber one i have been using on the lenco for a number of years, i am getting a more natural presentation, a slightly more solid image which is a smidge wider, and a bit more control. Music just seems to flow better. completely subjective comments, but i cant think how better to describe it. It also seems to be quieter in terms of surface noise which i cant quite reconcile as to why

I wasn't expecting much difference if any, but its there

I have re set the arm height so that the vta is as it was too so the arm setup is the same as the heavy rubber one.

Need to work out how to get a slightly neater edge cut so i can make another one for the jvc.

It will be a nice little distraction to try it on the jvc and the roksan and see the differences there compared to the original felt on the roksan and the 3mm nitrile one on the jvc because i think it works very well on the lenco. Cant try it on the jbe though because of the podular platter

Onwards!

Many many moons ago i tried 2 different types of leather, one with a shiny side, one suede. I couldn't get excited about the one with a shiny side, up either way. The floppy suede one however is the second best option i found, and the best without a record clamp. All completely subjective of course.

I tried a leather mat (Tonar) on my Logic deck and preferred it to rubber or felt. However I then went acrylic and that gave me the performance I was looking for.

I made a two-ply leather platter mat some years ago. The top (suede) surface had a larger centre hole which acted as a label recess. Used it on my previous Rega TTs with great success but haven't yet tried it on my current (Vinyl Ant built) Lenco. I think I will do so.

I'll be interested to hear how that goes. I'm undecided, so far, on what works best on my Lenco. Have tried cork, cork / rubber composite, soft rubber, wool. Struggled to tell much difference between those.

Before I sold my BTE Lenco, I preferred an Achromat over the rubber Lenco one.
