FM Radio

Unread post by Geoff.R.G »

For the first time in many years I have bought an item of Hi-Fi equipment. Not that Richard would approve because what I bought was a replacement for my Quad 99 FM tuner, the original one having lost communication with the 99 Pre-amp, meaning no remote control.

I know that many people think, probably correctly, that steam radio is old hat but FM offers a high quality audio signal, assuming that the original input is of commensurate quality. Since most of my listening is Radio 3 the original is normally of high quality so no problem there. Radio offers one access to music that might otherwise be ignored, unlike streaming services the listener doesn’t choose the content. Not that I like everything I hear.

Radio isn’t something everyone will appreciate with its inevitable dynamic range compression and upper frequency limit but I like it.

In the olden days Radio 3 live broadcasts were rightly very highly regarded, we still listen to it but resent their need to comentate on some performances.

Do you think these "commentaries" might be for the same reason as when DJs started talking over the end of songs, to stop people recording them? When you consider how much recording quality has improved with the advent of the digital age, it sort of makes sense, to me anyway, but that's no guarantee of ...well ... anything really
