Are we are a dying breed?

Unread post by CN211276 »

https://www.headphonesty.com/2024/09/au ... gone-soon/

I think there is a lot of truth in this and it is a similar age profile with the gigs I attend.

Quote from the article

"YouTube data shows that most audiophiles are old dudes arguing over gear no one else wants."

Largely true imo. It also mentions snobbery - there is a lot of it about but same for everything really.

Young people don't have the spare money to spend and not enough space. This could be true but you could make a decent effort in an average sized bedroom if you really wanted to.

Music is good for you. It enriches the mind and soul and also lifts your mood. It doesn't matter what equipment gets you there as long as you get there.

I am past caring to be honest. Who will lament the disappearance of the audiophool ? Not calling anybody here a fool btw - sensible people frequent this forum.

To be frank i dont really care so much these days, i got where i wanted to get give or take, and play with analogue when the mood takes me. I do much more listening via cans now, via my phone and the p7s, and via the heaphone system upstairs.

I lost interest in the persuit of making stuff better quite a while ago.
Been 12 months since i bought anything other than lps. I did recap my sl150 for the headphone system but the bits cost nothing. Thats all ive done other than listen to stuff. which makes me quite happy. Gave my away the auto jvc ql y3f i restored and a jds labs dac i bought, and some hifiman deva cans to my dad, hes been building heaphone amps so hes quite happy too. Share the wealth!

Frankly, every dog has his day and we've had ours. It pains me to see the kids listen to rubbish on a rubbish system but I remember when I were a lad. I had a Garrard SP25, Teleton SAQ 203 and a set of Wharfdale unit 3 DIY speakers. I've a come a ways since then and if my kids never play my stuff when I'm dead, I doubt I'll be worrying about it.

Now my guitars - I'd be very sorry if someone doesn't inherit them. But who knows!

A very valid point in the article is the mastering of most popular music today. While it can sound good on a decent hifi system it could sound far, far better if the target audience was not those listening through ear buds, sound bars etc. The main problem is far to much compression. Although studeo technology was not what it is now in the 70s and 80s, recordings sounded better. In my opinion, and that of most people my age, the music was as well.

I intend to leave a list for my son, telling him what starting price to put each of my guitars on eBay for. I mean, it's not like I'll be leaving him any money the way this country's shaping up.
